Edelbuerto Gonzalez-Andujar, a transgender woman who went by Amanda, was found dead in her ransacked Ridgewood apartment yesterday afternoon. Around 4 p.m. acquaintances came looking for the 29-year-old, only to find her naked and lifeless on the bed. "Everything in the apartment was destroyed. All her Marilyn Monroe pictures were destroyed," Barbara Vega told the Daily News, adding that she'd been trying to reach her friend since Friday. Gonzalez-Andujar had been stabbed several times in the neck and chest; the Times reports that her laptop was missing from the apartment, but so far cops aren't sure whether there was a break-in and don't have any suspects. "She never had any problems with anybody...We need to know who did this to her," said Vega.

Was it necessary to know that she was transgender?

It is if they try to turn this into a hate crime, which is redundant since all crimes have malicious intent.

  • duckumu

but all crimes don't necessarily have malicious intent toward a larger group of people. hate crimes are different because they're almost a form of terrorism -- they instill fear in a specific community, making it clear that "if you express this natural trait in yourself, you (as a group) will be targeted". isolated crimes don't have this extra layer of meaning.

I'll say it again: Why they committed the crime is not important. The fact that they committed the crime is.

If people continue to pigeon-hole crimes, all kinds of loopholes will be created and nothing will get done and the criminals will remain free. Terrorism is yet another term that has been watered down by the media and both liberals and conservatives to mean almost nothing. Crime is crime. Plain and simple.

Keep eating what you're being fed by the 'authorities'. Eventually, it's going to make you puke.

So do you think someone who shoots a cop should get the same punishment as someone who shoots a child rapist?

  • Guest

First off, thank for comparing apples and oranges. That makes it extremely easy for me to respond. Hate crime laws are centered around things that people are not able to, nor for the most part want to, change (their ethnicity, their sexual orientation, their beliefs).

What you asked is if someone who shoots a cop (a job that was chosen) should get the same punishment as someone who shoots a child rapist (a crime that someone horrible chose to commit). The simple answer is yes. Both deserve to be charged and tried on assualt with a deadly weapon (or murder, if the victim died).

My question to you is what if it's the same person? He shot the child rapist, and then when the authorities show up, he shot the cop.

Gee I'm guessing you're probably white and male.

Gee, I'm guessing you have no clue. Read my comment again. I never said that I have a problem with transgender people or any other people for that matter (except for felix and his holier-than-thou-animals-are-worth-more-than-people cronies). I have a problem with hate crime laws because they're redundant. All violators of the law, specifically those that are violent, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent no matter what the ethnicity or sexual preference or gender identity (or whatever) of the victim, in relation to the perpetrator, happens to be.

And although I am white and male, if I were attacked by someone who wasn't that hated white people, I would not want them charged with a hate crime. I would want them charged with exactly the crime they committed. Why they committed the crime is not important. The fact that they committed the crime is.

You should learn to think before you comment, but then again, your username is pigeon so you must be bird-brained.

It seems you're the bird brain. I never claimed you had a problem with transgendered people or anyone else. I was questioning your understanding of why hate crime laws exist and your ability to sympathize or empathize with any minority group, and the more you try to defend yourself, the more you prove my points. Thanks.

Are you really that daft? Empathizing with a minority and giving them the right to prosecute someone based on that person's thoughts are two totally different things. I'm sure that if you were ever convicted of a crime, the police could find some way to get you to confess that it was done because you hated that person's ethnicity (or whatever the case may be). You would then be tried under hate crime laws and get a longer sentence than someone not tried under those laws. Sympathizing with a minority means that you somehow pity them, which sounds a lot like believing yourself to be superior in some way. Do you want to be tried under hate crime laws if you accidentally kill a minority that you pity?

Hate crime laws exist because lawyers were unable to prosecute the current laws on the books because of loopholes created by other lawyers and 'law'makers. Instead of closing holes, 'law'makers keep themselves in office and employed by coming up with something like hate crimes instead of apologizing for doing a crappy job to begin with.

Also, I'm not defending myself. I could care less what you or anyone else on this blog thinks of me. I'm just stating why hate crime laws are redundant. You are the one showing your ignorance by acting as if you know what you're talking about.

The real difference between you and I, is that I don't believe in prosecuting people for their thoughts.

Anyone think that picture is reminiscent of the 'Queens veggie Nicole Angela Amendolare'? Maybe a possible connection. Where's Nikki Heat when you need her?

    Another Craigslist success story.

I blame that movie: "Ticked-Off Trannies With Knives"
