Rutgers Student In Coma After Mysterious Cancun Trip Incident

33110student.jpg A Rutgers pre-law student who was vacationing in Cancun is in a coma today under mysterious circumstances after sustaining brutal head injuries there. Joseph "Zeke" Rucker, 21, went on the trip to Mexico with friends two weeks ago to celebrate his graduation from Rutgers undergrad.

One of the friends told CBS that after partying for the night, Rucker chose to sleep outside on a lounge chair near the swimming pool. He was found by a security guard around 4 a.m., 30-40 ft. from the pool, with "his skull bashed in," his mother Anne told reporters.

His parents said Rucker suffered two fractures to the back of his skull and internal bleeding, and they believe it's "apparent that there was some random act of violence." Rucker was flown from a hospital in Mexico to a trauma center in Miami, where he is currently non-responsive.

    Meh.

I was in Cancun at this time.

Without knowing anything, I'd bet it was an American over a Mexican.

...never had the desire to take a trip to cancun, not even in my college years. hope he recovers fully.

So the folks at Rutgers aren't well informed of current world affairs. Mexico has been in a state of chaos for many months, and continues to be. Cartels and government are at war, practically. You're an idiot if you vacation in Cancun.

With that; being an idiot isn't grounds for such a terrible injury. I hope the guy recovers and lives to be an example for other kids.

All of Mexico? Practically at war? Where do you get your world news? Or have you been in a war?

My mom (70 years old) has been living in Mexico for a couple months this year and she feels safe. She's been there a lot, and grew up in the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, and also lived in Manhattan, so she's no rube.

I'm not saying that Mexico doesn't have serious drug-related security problems, but it's a big place with a lot of variety of situations.

I know Zeke personally and I can promise you that he did nothing to deserve this. He is not the type to start a fight with anyone by any means and is a very likeable person. I don't know if it was a Mexican, American, or any other race that did this but it is truly a disgusting act of violence and I hope that justice is served. My prayers go out to Zeke and his family .. stay strong buddy.

hahha, really i guess he was vacationing?

in cancun, right, you sure he wasnt taking advantage of the cheap booze and cheap floozies.

gringo got jacked, this is not news. rutgers should throw him out.

the likely scenario,,,gringo got drunk, mouthed off to a mexican, mexican kicked his ass...what else do you think happened?

  • jt10000

    WTF is wrong with you?

  • bullishnyc

Sounds like another dumbass gringo fratboy taking it too far.

  • pudeljung

    pedantic note:

has Rutgers now changed its college of arts and sciences to be known as "Rutgers undergrad" cuz... sounds stupid.

everyday tragedies and people making fun of tragedies...

Dear Gringos, There is no place in Mexico that is akin to Disney Land. It's a mostly poor foreign county and Cancun is not a secured play land made for Gringos to get stupidly drunk and pass out where they please. To do so puts you at risk of some poor janitor with a family of 10 seeing you passed out drunk, taking your wallet and pounding you in the head if you wake-up for fear of being fired from their job. Actually the person who hit you is probably on his way to America with your identity and money.

Although your posting was meant to be humorous (i think) you're probably closer to the truth than any other. With all the drug violence, State Dept warnings, shootings and killings, etc, I'm often stumped that college kids take spring breaks in what is fast becoming a third-world country, and then get drunk out of their minds, so much so that they can't defend themselves. Obviously there's more to this story than meets the eye, but in the end a sad way for an otherwise healthy young man to almost get himself killed. Next time, go to San Diego, meet some girls and drink some O'Douls.

Mexico is a big country and there are big differences in the violent crime rates in different places. It is horrendous in a lot of places along the US border. There are a variety of levels of crimes in other places.

  • Spook

I would call the humor in question a cross between gallows humor and dark sarcasm toward Americans with a " Cancun spring break" sentimentality who treat other people's country as their personal frat boy/girl playground. But I disagree about not going to Mexico. I went two years ago and had a great time. But I was careful at all times, watched my drinking( of course I went there for diving) and demonstrated respect for the country as oppose to treating it like it's a huge bar that lets out onto the ocean.

  • Boogie Down

This is exactly right. I traveled/worked a few years ago in some pretty remote areas of southern Mexico. I had a wonderful experience, but this is because I was always sure to show respect for Mexico and its people. Americans need to learn that the rest of the world doesn't exist for their amusement. That being said, I hope this kid makes it. I hate violence, but am also aware that the manner in which one conducts themselves will often dictate their experiences.

Mexicans can say the same thing if they read the horrible story of the woman, who was passed out in the park bench was r*a*p*e*d in NYC

  • Spook
