Is AT&T Out With New iPhone?

attiphone0310.jpg Apple is developing a new iPhone to debut this summer; it's said to be thinner with a faster processor... but will it give customers what they really want: a new carrier? According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is working on producing a new iPhone that would make the gadget available through Verizon, and other CDMA carriers. The question is when will it be available to the public (some say this summer, some September, some 2012). Their exclusive arrangement with AT&T is coming to an end—which will certainly make many users happy; their service has been iBysmal in New York (for real) and other metro areas.

if iphone does away with at&t, i might even think about getting one, and i'm not even a big fan of the iphone.

oh, and if you work for a phone company and are reading this, i'm not the only one either. trust me.

I think AT&T's long-promised NYC network upgrades are finally coming to fruition... The service on my iPhone has improved over the past couple months.

Really? Cause, I think I just got a text message that was originally sent on Saturday.

AT&T is long past unacceptable....but the iPhone is just far and away the best cellphone ever, and the best invention of the last 10 years.

let the at&t/verizon data price war begin!

The WSJ cited no sources and there have yet to be any credible sources saying apple is develop a new phone to be released this summer on verizon or anyone else. The article clearly says, 'appears to be' which to my mind is a shot in the dark based on Apple's usual release schedule.

It has to be Verizon. They're the biggest CDMA carrier out there. Why spend money developing it for the smaller CDMA carrier? Apple wants to maximize their profit & the Verizon network is said to be the most robust. They certainly don't want to run into the same problems AT&T has.

They could develop it for both Verizon & Sprint because of mutual technology, but my guess is that its for the former.

I'm not saying Verizon isnt the logical choice, I'm saying this is all derived from the typical Apple rumor-mill. There is no credible evidence to suggest Verizon will get the iPhone this summer. That's not to say it couldnt happen, it just hasnt been proven to be in the works.

Can Verizon carry that type of load on their network? It remains to be seen.

I'm currently with Verizon and if they get the iPhone, I'll get it if it's a CDMA/LTE (4G) version. If it's only CDMA, I'll have to wait. I know Qualcomm makes a CDMA/LTE chip so the tech is there. Anyway, I know it's only a matter of time before a second carrier gets the iPhone. I think Verizon makes more sense than Sprint or T-Mobile. I also hope the AT&T version isn't better than the Verizon version as a way for Apple to keep it's original partner, AT&T, happy (that it also includes a higher quality display for example).

I can totally see lots of AT&T customers jumping ship and heading to Verizon if this really happens.

I was on the same boat, but I think what people are saying is true - think of the data load that all those at&t users who want to switch to verizon would bring; I'm sure the network would suffer as a result, and perhaps then at&t's network would actually improve a bit!

Or let some of these phones just the WiFi network when available.

  • Darrell

Doesn't matter, all carriers are going to have to deal with additional traffic thanks to the growing popularity of smart phones (namely the iPhone and Android platforms)

  • Kojak

Probably, but the amount of Data usage a light IPhone user makes is astounding compared to a heavy Blackberry user. Eventually they'll upgrade their network to cope, but not after going through the same bumps AT&T is going through now.

Hell. The Verizon plan will probably cost even more than the AT&T plan will anyway.

They had a breakdown on CNBC about a month ago, that showed that regardless of what cellphone carrier provider you use, the United States only has a limited amount of data that can be processed over airways (that was probabaly a gross over-simplification, sorry), but an analyst made the argument that "yes, AT&T is currently inundated and at capacity with their data users, but there's no reason to believe that once the iPhone goes to Verizon this same problem won't eventually materialize. Individuals are just using more data than they ever have, and the airways can't cope." Which brings me to my next question..... When are we just gonna have wireless internet everywhere? This would solve SOOO many problems, and probably boost consumerism....if everyone just had THE INNERNET!~
