Trader Joe's Confirmed On UWS

joesshirt.jpg The Hawaiian shirtification of the Upper West Side is about to go down, with the new Trader Joe's setting up shop in a residential tower in the neighborhood. NY1 reports that the construction is nearly complete at 72nd and Broadway, and Gotham Organization Vice President Jeffrey Kaye confirms rumors of the grocer moving in. Kaye told them: "It's official. Trader Joe's will be coming. We expect them to open later this year... we can’t confirm what the date will be." Fairway Market and Citarella are just two blocks away, and one UWS resident wonders if "this is going to become food row."

All I have to say is...HELL YEAH!

Looks like Trader Joe's on 72nd is opening in September or October: http://westsideindependent.com/2010/03/03/trader-joes-expected-to-open-late-septemberearly-october/

No TJs i've ever been in can even hold a candle to the quality of food at Fairway, and Citarella doesn't even bear comparison.

Put it another way, if Citarella is Formula 1 racing, then Fairway is Le Mans and TJs is the local go-kart track: Fun, but hardly serious.

ooh... fairway vs trader joes. i likes it. :)

If they're smart they'll just have a slew of cash registers. The Brooklyn branch always has long lines but they move pretty fast. Also, because it's well staffed, the shelves are generally full, except for maybe late afternoons on weekends.

This Saturday there was a line to get into the store, but the real crazies are the ones waiting to get pizza (which they get to eat on the street) a few blocks east -BAH BAH.

Gwinny, According to my source no wine shop...apparently NYC only allows one liquor license per company and therefore the Union Sq wine shop will be the only one. Seems like a weird law to me but I dunno I can only pass along what they told me. The UWS location will sell beer!

  • Gwinny

Disappointing, but thanks for the info!

  • kedeady

They are also opening up a location in Chelsea 6th ave and 22nd I believe...where the old Barnes and Noble used to be on the corner. Personally I can't wait, hopefully then the traffic at Union Sq will be less insane.

  • Gwinny

I wonder if there will be a wine shop?

  • schadenfreudian mensch

No wine shop. Only one wine store per corp. NYS law.

  • Gothampc

It's the UWS. There will be a "whine" shop.

  • Gwinny

    haha. good point

  • kazubes

If you think the Union Square location is bad with the mob scene, wait until the UWS mom brigade rolls in with their double wide strollers.

  • It's going to be in the basement, so maybe you'll be able to get things while they are waiting for the elevator.

  • nicemarmot

Will the shelves actually be full of merchandise? The one in Union Square tends to be pretty desolate.

  • Gothamist_Cynic

Go to the Bergen street one. It's a lot nicer and better stocked.

  • RoboticInsides

The empty shelves and the long lines are great if you long for the USSR of days gone by.

  • I can't wait!
