Prospect Park's Giant Rabbit Needs Some Love

herbierabbit.jpg

Yesterday (just in time for Easter!) the Prospect Park Zoo alerted potential visitors that their 3-year-old Flemish giant rabbit—Herbie, who weights in at 18 lbs—is available for petting! They note: "zoo-goers can greet Herbie and touch other animals at the Live Animal Encounters program held every Saturday and Sunday at 12:30, 1:00, 2:30, 3:00 p.m." Surprisingly, this big guy is a full 10 lbs lighter than some others of his kind!

you know what would go nicely with that? A fur hat!!

Leave him alone, damn sick people cant leave animals alone.

  • robingee

It's not so bad, they are just going to pet him. People keep rabbits as pets after all. Let's focus on the a-holes that buy buns for Easter and then tire of them and let them out in the "wild" - where they cannot take care of themselves.

Kids need a humane education. What harm is there in petting a bunny rabbit? None. The rabbit needs to switch to a vegan diet-pretty big gut there

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

rabbits are herbivores so I don't know what the hell you are taking about. Humane education is to respect all life which doesn't include treating them as commodities used for your own pleasures.

And so what should we do with this big, snuggly bunny?

  • dadoc

I mean, really. Kids being able to have contact with an animal and exposure to something other than project weapon-dogs and rats is a bad thing? I doubt this 18 pound bunnie can survive in the wild. Must be devastating to be warm, well-fed, free from risk of predation, held frequently and get stroked by delighted kids who may gain some healthy perspectives. Fine. Let's release him on the Columbia Campus so he can snuggle with the coyotes, they're lonely too.

I find those giant rabbits oddly creepy.

Meanwhile the rabbit is like, get the fuck off me.
