City Places Jail-Themed Playground In Bed-Stuy

phpg7nYS3PM.jpg A new playground should be something to celebrate... except when the city puts a big ol' jail-themed jungle gym in the middle of a Bed-Stuy Housing Authority property. Black and Brown News reported on the new addition to the Tompkins Houses, where they point out "Black and Latino children live and play. (Disproportionately, Black and Latinos enter the criminal justice system." Reportedly the New York City Housing Authority orders and selects the items, and a spokesperson told the site, “We are looking into it and assessing the situation and what needs to be done.” Hopefully they'll replace it with something a little less bleak and a lot more hopeful. Have you spotted any prison playgrounds in other neighborhoods? [via Brownstoner]

This is fucked up shame on Bloomberg and he also is in charge of those kids education. They are FUCKED.

  • This is a joke, right?

If it isn't, all you righteous right-wingers ARE WAY OFF BASE!

I guess it's OK if they get high, as long as it's on alcohol, the proven lubricant for wife-beaters around the globe.

Hey newport27, I suppose it's OK that Teabaggers swallow everything that Faux News feeds them, hook line and sinker? Do me a favor and turn off your PC and turn on the telly.

  • NannyState

Yep, those aren't tears of joy in their little eyes, they're tattoos.

  • Soggy

Do you also not respect white communities that take what American society feeds them (i.e., white privilege)?

  • JenChungsBaby

How about white communities where every kid has a gold chain, his hat on sideways, his pants halfway down his ass and is blasting the latest Snoop Dogg on his car stereo?

  • Ishtar

All while he rides around in the car his parents pay the note and insurance for. He gets high all day. Slacks his way through high school, but still manages to get into Princeton because his dad is an alumni and donor.

  • newport27

what I really cannot respect about the african american and latino communities is that they just give in and take whatever american society feeds them.. all that identity-shaping, mass-media controlled brainwashing, gangster culture, shallow mindless hiphop culture.. consistently perpetuated by self-interested mass-media and entertainment industries with an agenda.. they just eat it all up

  • disembodied cat head

are you suggesting that enraged minority parents take the bait, go out, & destroy the playground so that the cops throw them in real jail & the kids are still exposed to it anyway? there are some matters that are unfortunately outside of personal choice.

  • hotstepper

"all that identity-shaping, mass-media controlled brainwashing, gangster culture, shallow mindless hiphop culture..."

wait, are you talking about blacks and latinos or the honkies who watch and star in Jersey Shore?

  • Professor_X

Don't forget smoking all that crack that the CIA sells them.

They are certainly blameless for any of the negative aspects of the culture that The Man has created for them.

  • potsmoker

ever since i was a little kid there was always people who would tell you about the man and how they program children into submission, always showing you things on the dollar bill and saying things like the all seeing eye had meaning. theres always those types in all my life in nyc ive run into them, and sometimes what they say makes sense, sometimes they are just plain crazy,

but if one of those cats came up to me and said the man wants to train young black kids to be ready for life in prison and point over to the project playground, i wouldnt think he was crazy...

  • JenChungsBaby

People in my neighborhood are pissed that the new local playground has a Smithsonian theme. They would prefer Library of Congress.

  • jcrim

West Village kids got a Harvard playground.

    Smh.

  • Spudster

That's in really bad taste--but I chalk it up to thoughtlessness, rather than malice.

  • Rocknrope

    Thug Life?

  • mocanlagunas

well, there are office cleaning lady toys and costumes for kids... I guess some people have different aspirations (or are more realists than others)...

  • 40oz.killa

    hahaha - pretty messed up

  • at least this makes more sense than that movie "9" with the unimaginative steam punk ragdolls. I can't believe that shit!
