Democrat and lawyer David Greenfield formidably won the special election for a Brooklyn council seat formerly held by Simcha Felder yesterday. Greenfield, who was backed strongly by Mayor Bloomberg, got 58 percent of the vote in Brooklyn's 44th district to handily beat fellow Democrat Joe Lazar, who took in just under 40 percent.
Greenfield replaces the pro-grace period, anti-pigeon Councilman Felder, who won re-election last year, but resigned to become deputy comptroller for "Mr. Comptroller" John Liu. Greenfield, a former staffer on Joe Liberman's presidential campaign, is considered a "longtime political fixture in the Orthodox Community," according to the Post. Greenfield had faced some controversy earlier this month after he sued to stop an 18-year-old from entering the council race.
