Woman Who Fell To Her Death Was Paralyzed

Portrait of Patti Gregory by her husband Danny
The woman who plunged to her death yesterday at LaGuardia Place and West 3rd Street was 50-year-old Patti Gregory. Her husband, Danny Gregory, wrote a book called Everyday Matters in 2003, after his wife lost the use of her legs in a subway accident. At the time, he wrote: "Two years before I started drawing, my wife was run over by a subway train. Sounds really terrible, I know. But, well, this book is about how art and New York City saved my life."

According to the Daily News, cops say she managed to vault herself off the 8th floor balcony, and they believe it was "no accident." And while she was still breathing when they got to her on a 2nd floor terrace, she died soon after at St. Vincent's hospital.

A friend of the family's told the paper that her husband isn't ready to call it a suicide, saying, "I don't know how she could get over the railing. She's handicapped. She's in a wheelchair."

JenChungsBaby, this was a real woman, not some character from a movie. You do know the difference between movies and reality, don't you?

drewo, your comments are stunningly insensitive.

If you click the link above for Everyday Matters, his wife is the top comment. Very spooky gothamist.

Oh my, I used to see this woman walk her dogs in the neighborhood! Tragic, bizarre, very sad.

Suicidal building jumpers should take a moment to be sure that their selfish death plunge does not kill or injure people on terraces or the street below.

I know - they want to die and don't care. But the folks below may actually want to carry on with their own lives.

I really enjoy Danny Gregory's books. Drawing was a way he worked through the pain of his wife's accident.

    This is terribly sad.

  • Really sad—"Everyday Matters" is a beautiful affirmation of life and Danny Gregory expressed so much love for Patti in it.

Didn't the husband see Gary Sinise in Forrest Gump? She could have vaulted over that railing no problem.
