MSG to Broadcast Rangers Vs. Islanders in 3D

031810hockey.jpg Television history will be made Wednesday night when the world’s first home-broadcasted, live 3D sporting event will bring the Rangers-Islanders game to you in 3D. And by "you," we mean the handful of people who own the 3D high-definition TVs that went on sale about a week ago. But if you don't have one of the TVs or know anyone who does, there's another way to be a part of history. MSG will host a "viewing event" with 2,500 guests, and while most of them will be sponsors or Cablevision employees, about 600 of the tickets will be on sale for the public for $20, Crain's reports.

The 3D game will be broadcast at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, just downstairs from where the actual three-dimensional game will be played in boring, unmediated reality. During the sporting contest, five recently-purchased 3D cameras will be positioned on platforms lower down in the arena than for regular high-def broadcasts. "You produce 3D games differently," Mike Bair, the president of MSG Media, tells the Times. "And you have to hold shots longer and not cut as quickly." Producers hope the game will augur a new era of television magic, but you've got to feel a little sorry for Islanders fans, because losing stings three times worse in 3D.

@6, I'd believe that, but Winnipeg wasn't in the game. Only a vague "New York" team.

@9, thanks for giving some props to the Isles, even if its only further illuminating our mediocrity.

What's important about the Isles/Rangers games is the intense rivalry. Watching it in 3D won't make it any better, or motivate me more to tune in. I'd do it already, and be happy to watch on my time warner cable-fueled, regular non-HD TV set. Regardless, it's gonna be a fun game. Thanks for nothing, really, Cablevision.

    Potvin sucks.

You've got to feel a little sorry for Islanders fans, because losing stings three times worse in 3D. Do you bother to look at the standings? Both the Rangers and the Islanders are not in the playoff picture today. 4 Points separate the two teams and the Islanders have a game at hand. What's more embarrassing is that the Rangers payroll is far greater than the Islanders. They allegedly have better players and still suck. What will be more embarrassing is that MSG will host a viewing event and the Rangers get crushed by the inferior Islanders. Here's a concept, maybe the NHL should focus on the precarious financial state of the league before busting out another shitty gimmick ala the glow puck debacle that was mentioned above. Fire Gary Bettman today...

I completely agree. I saw Bettman in the NHL Store on 6th a few weeks ago. I should have punched him in the throat when I had the chance.

Fuck this shit. HDTVs have only just become affordable in the last coupe years, and now they're foisting this new 3D technology on us? Our shiny new HDTVs are already old hat and on the way out? FUCK THEM AND THEIR 3D SHIT!

Also then the cable companies and FiOS will have a new package called 3D costing like another $10-15 extra a month.

  • SirDentes

@1 , I don't know that looks more like the Winnipeg Jets.

Remember the glowing puck that FOX tried out for awhile in the 90's?

  • drewo

The shots from the "goalie cam" might be pretty cool.

Home-broadcast? How you receive the signal? Wouldn't you need a special receiver box that supports 3D content, just like you need a special 3D blu-ray player?

  • longacre

If only Cablevision hadn't run Nobody Beats the Wiz into bankruptcy so I could buy a 3D TV from there.

  • EricGewiz

Also - hate that last line. You realize we're on a three game winning streak right now, yes?

And, by the way, do some research: Isles are 3-1 in the season series this year against the Rangers.

  • EricGewiz

    1) Too much of a gimic. The world is in 3-D, why do I need to watch it that way on tv. I'd rather go to the game, anyway. Atmosphere is biggest part of Isles-Rangers game.

    2) Growing up, I always believed that "New York" in Blades of Steel for Nintendo was the Isles, b/c the red like color looked orange to me. If that screen grab is from the game, then there's more proof. That logo looks much more like a NYI logo than a NYR logo.

    GO ISLES!

That pic looks like the Winnipeg Jets vs the Edmonton Oilers.
