Vegan Protesters Demand Cruelty-Free Dunkin' Donuts

A Fine Blog spotted a demonstration today outside the Dunkin' Donuts on East 14th Street, where protesters were handing out free vegan donuts and literature about the chain's use of factory farm eggs: "When asked if DD would change to a cage free supplier who used humane practices, one protester said 'that would be an improvement, but that would never happen for such a large chain.'" For more on what these people are so upset about, check out Dunkin' Cruelty, which has targeted Michael Foods, the egg supplier for several national restaurant chains, including Dunkin' Donuts. One investigator used a hidden camera to document abuses including "hens immobilized in the wires of their cages, unable to access food or water; and decomposing and 'mummified' corpses left in cages with live birds." Mmmm, mummies. Disturbing video below!

    That's Gotham-ist. Whatever.

The meat-eater comments on this site are just childish. Gotham posted this story just because it knew it would get a bunch of raging, defensive meat-eaters to post adolescent ad hominem remarks.

All donuts are bad for you, vegan or not. It would be nice to have a vegan donut extremely rare times that I enter Dunkin Donuts, but my metabolism doesn't really support donuts. So maybe it's a good thing I can't get them there.

The way food is factory-farmed is cruel for all animals, including us. Read Fast Food Nation if you could care less about what happens to animals, and see how our sources of food treat the employees.

Li, thanks for the donut tip, I'll keep it in mind, though I shouldn't! There was a place on like 2nd ave and 4th st. or something that had donuts, not sure if they're still there.

For really great vegan donuts in NYC, hit up Terri between 5th and 6th on 23rd street! They are the only ones that carry vegan donuts in Manhattan and they are insanely moist and flavorful!

There's really no need to try to "save" the donut eaters. They are gonna get fat and diabetic...karma.

They would do much better to help design cheaper cages that are bird friendly and allow better egg production - then support those suppliers by cutting corporate taxes on companies that use methods that are bird friendly. IN OTHER WORDS Buy more non Vegan donuts from companies that treat birds better; instead of going vegan -which then reduces the profits of egg suppliers and forces them to use the cheapest methods to make eggs - causing birds to be mistreated even more....

Well If you consider men animals then yes I do have sex with Animals ! Maybe you should give it a try . Might alleviate all this tension you seem to have toward the rule of evolution . You know the whole food chain thing where Humans sit atop and basically feed on most of the lower life forms . You do realize that we as humans have evolved to this current form by way of eating meat . While those grass, leaf-eating, Ground Turnip lovers died out Thousands of years ago ! I wonder why ? Could have been that eating all those grasses, Leaves, Tree Branches, Ground Turnips, Sea Mosses, Algee's had something to do with it ? History both states, and Agrees with this

! While those of us that gorged on meat survived, and prospered . Interesting .............

I agree and think that more should be charged to insure that the chickens are not overly abused. After all I love to eat chicken but I think they should not be tortured. My only stipulation is that the donuts not be called vegan donuts because generally vegans are pretty annoying

  • nyccr

i don't get it? they want them to make only vegan doughnuts, or in addition to regular cruelty doughnuts?

also, there are PEOPLE in this very city who live in cramped unsanitary conditions and have little or no access to food. but, yeah, lets get those chickens a better life.

    apples and oranges

I hope they win. I heard vegans are delicious and Ive never tried a donut made out of them. Are they going to grind up the vegans and make a jelly-like filling or will it be a cake donut? Cant wait.

  • newsie

We're all skin and bones, and whatever is there is all gamey. You don't want to eat us.

  • ides_of_march

I'd rather eat dunkin donuts than tree bark and alfalfa sprouts.

  • HughGass

    whatever happened to choice.

  • whitecastlerock

Vegan or not, Dunkin Donuts is a shithole. Lousy overpriced coffee with mediocre stale donuts. Most of the locations are downright filthy with surly workers. I have no idea how they stay in business.

  • rasputinsghost

Strange, all the Dunkin' Donuts I've been to have been staffed by impeccably nice and efficient South Asian immigrants

    must be a nice neighborhood
