City Housing Projects Awarded Federal Stimulus Money

2010_3_rutgershouses.jpg

At least $350 million of federal stimulus money—and at least $65 million of annual subsidies—will be directed towards 21 New York City housing projects to pay for much-needed renovations. The major allocation of cash will allow workers to fix facades, roofs, heating systems, elevators and other problems in buildings where 20,000 New Yorkers reside, according to DNAinfo. Some tenants feared the stimulus money was a sign the buildings would shift away from low-income housing, but Mayor Bloomberg told the Daily News: "Nothing is going to change, except for the better." According to the Lo-Down, he added: "While other cities are blowing up public housing, we are preserving it."

  • really!?!?

Why can't this money go to the MTA or other infrastructure projects that would benefit everyone, rather then a project that benefits just 0.25% of the city's population. Have they done something to deserve this money, other then not contributing the the city's tax base?

  • Gotham Extremist

why can't it be the other way around, like the ghetto people have to commute 2 hrs each way from the burbs to get to the city and all the rest of new yorkers stay in the 5 boros?

  • Snoopy

Good point. Perhaps you should go into urban planning as a career.

  • Wza

The tenants celebrated by busting shots into the air.

  • Rocko

I think more projects should be built in nyc. I think the problem is that the more upper class developments need to be burned down, wit all the queers, racists, devils, and fearful cowards that live in them

  • rapscallion

I love the tactful blending of queers into this second response, Rocko. I'm looking forward to reading your continued insight into this subject.

I worked on a project with NYCHA. They have nice folks working for them - every one of them can tell you exactly how many months they have until retirement - but they sure spend a lot of money on slow/painful fixes.

  • Boogie Down

Yup, in the ghetto (mindset) it's perfectly acceptable to be homophobic, but ask anyone who's not white (or Asian or Middle Eastern) to take responsibility for their actions and you will hear the deafening cries of "RACISM". This hypocrisy never gets old.

  • Snoopy

I don't, but some people might perceive your observation as racist.

  • Boogie Down

The term "racism" has lost virtually all meaning due to the situation I described above. It's pretty rare that the use of that term holds any validity anymore.

  • Tower18

The projects SHOULD be blown up. The problem then, as cities like Chicago have seen, is what next? Where do the people go? That's the stickier situation. "Tower in a park" public housing is pretty much universally considered to be a disaster. But no city has been totally successful in tearing them down and facing the consequences.

  • Rocko

BEST CHOICE HE EVER MADE!! I know all the racist devils on gothamist and in society are extreeeemely angry.. And those same racist devils are the reason why america is hated by the rest of the world... And they are also the same white porkies who cried for unity after the 9/11 attacks. Just goes to show that devils will be devils. GO TO HELL WHITE PORKY DEVILS!!

  • Professor_X

White porkies? Racist devils? What an interesting world you live in.

How wonderful for you that Uncle Sam is going to fix up your house for you. Maybe now you can have some guests over and broaden your world view.

  • Gotham Extremist

What a dick, blowing up projects only works when you blow up the people living in them as well. Doesn't bloomie know that?

  • cutlass

I think what he meant to say is "While other cities are blowing up public housing, we pander to voting blocs."

  • dirty hipster

Hey - can we get some of that money for the MTA por favor?

  • Snoopy

"While other cities are blowing up public housing, we are preserving it."

Of all his years in office, this was probably the worse choice he ever made.

  • tsol

Burning the cash would have been less destructive.
