Winds Stop Staten Island Ferry Service

2009_07_sifer.jpg What winds! NotifyNYC issued an alert saying, "All service on the Staten Island Ferry has been suspended in both directions due to severe weather conditions and high tides." The suspension, ordered by the U.S. Coast Guard and captain of the docks ordered, began at 5:30 p.m., and the Staten Island Advance reports the high winds are "preventing the ferries from docking safely." Also, NotifyNYC says, "The 911 system is experiencing a large volume of weather related calls. Callers who dial 911 to report an emergency are requested to stay on the line. The public should call 911 for emergencies only, and 311 for non-emergencies." We'll do a round of up the wild weather tomorrow morning—let us know what you've experienced in the comments below!

I spent the day in my heavy rain gear fantasizing about fishing for King Crab off Alaska. The clerk at Mephisto kept giving me stares.

  • Where do you draw the line between emergency and non emergency? This can vary per person and age.

  • In Ditmas Park, there was a tree down on Cortelyou Road. The wind ripped some of the flashing off of the roof line of our house, so now I've gotta figure out whether I can find a siding guy to come out to do a really small project...pfft.

Also, we had a flag out front (the prior owners left it there, and we kept it up so that our neighbors wouldn't think we were unpatriotic). The wind snapped the flag pole in two. The flag itself is still attached to the pole, but the pole is in our azalea bush.

Good luck with your flashing... wait a minute

I can't believe what people call 911 for in this city. City folk make fun of hicks but as soon as the weather gets bad city folk call 911 for anything. Hicks light some candles and put on some gloves and get the chainsaw out. NYC people need to toughen up a lot. They'll call 911 for a branch in the street. Get of your lazy ass and pitch in. City folk claim to be sophisticated and knowledgeable but lack common sense and a willingness to help out neighbors. I'm moving back to the suburbs as soon as possible.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

in Inwooed, it's an umbrella holocaust! the streets are littered with umbrella corpses. everywhere you look, another dead umbrella, sometimes nothing but the cloth cover, no skeleton, sometimes nothing but a handle and pole.

    it's total umbrella carnage.

seriously, never seen so many umbrellas and umbrella parts in the streets in one day.

I tried to pick up as many as I could and put them in garbage cans, so they wouldn't keep blowing around and hurt people, but gave up.

  • Spirit of 76

What amazes me is how people think umbrellas would be worth anything at all in this kind of weather. Even assuming you have an absolutely indestructible umbrella that can hold its shape or can just flip inside out and back without damage, just how much do you think it will shield you from rain driven almost horizontally? I switch to a raincoat or poncho when the winds whip up.

Yeah, I was out yesterday, started my trip with an umbrella and then closed it when I realized there was really no point; I was getting soaked one way or another and at least by closing it my umbrella lived to see another day. My boyfriend's umbrella was not so lucky

According to the NYC Notification I got at 11:26 PM--All Staten Island Ferry service has been restored.

  • Snoopy

Talk about wishing you had a camera. I saw at least three umbrellas turned inside out on the sidewalk.

  • My boyfriend and I were waiting for an F train at West 4th Street around 6:15 tonight when it was announced that no trains were coming in or going out of the station due to a "power outage." We ended up walking over to 14th and getting on the L and eventually transferring to a G. It was pretty nasty out there.

  • Boogie Down

Jesus Christ! We waited for the F for nearly an hour at 14th St/6th Ave STARTING AT 7:30! So, it had already been out of service for over an hour by that point, yet nobody bothered to put up marking tape by the stairs, signs, or make an announcement? Unbelievable! If I'd known, I would've taken the L to the G as well (the thought crossed my mind a few times, but I tend to avoid the G like the plague). However, after an hour of what felt like utter defeat, we just gave up and turned back homeward. Fuck you, MTA.

Outside the 157th Street stop on the 1 line, there must have been a dozen busted umbrellas within 30 feet. They filled the garbage can, were stuffed in between the subway entrances, and just lying on the sidewalk. These insane wind gusts are instant umbrella destroyers, whether or not they're pointed into the wind.

  • Snoopy

I sure hope Snooki had enough hair spray to hold down her doo. Those winds were pretty nasty.

    Anyone here have any updates?

  • Snoopy

Oh my GOD what a nightmare!

I went to the deli to get a sixpack to settle in for a good night of Gothamist and although I had an umbrella the wind was horrible and I got my pants and shoes wet.

Count your blessings. If this was snow it would have been the storm of the century without all the bullshit the meteorologists and inch counters usually say in Central Park.

  • wow 14th street

Roof is leaking but not over the bed ,g'night zzzzzz.

  • sqg

    I got wet.

I was at a bodega paying for my groceries when I overheard a cashier saying that "anybody that was outside was just crazy". I made a shocked face and asked my cashier whether the other one had insulted all the customers by calling us crazy. My cashier smiled and said, "Don't pay attention, she's the one that's crazy".

    It was harrowing!

  • mellow_fellow

If there's more than one cashier, it's not a bodega.
