Flock Of Geese Attacks Plane Carrying Post Reporter

Are Canada geese fighting back at the NY Post? The plucky tabloid reports that a flock of the birds struck a Boeing 777 that left Newark for Hong Kong on Wednesday: "The pilot told controllers the geese hit the left wing of the craft, which was fully loaded with fuel for the 16-hour flight." And among the 301 passengers—a Post reporter!

Reporter Brendan Scott said, "It was a whole flocking family of geese. Members of the flight crew, who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the incident, said they had seen a single-goose strike before. Never a flock." The plane circled for 90 minutes while it dumped fuel; when it landed back at Newark, Continental found that while many birds were "ingested," the engine wasn't damaged. Passengers took another flight to Hong Kong yesterday.

The Post had advocated for the killing of Canada geese after a bird strike caused Flight 1549 to splash land in the Hudson last year. Perhaps this episode will only further strengthen the Post's resolve against Canada geese.

  • Dead Himmler

Very cute Jen. I hope that panda he was chatting with was happy!!

  • justthinkin

Given that the flight was going to Hong Kong, I'm surprised that the Post didn't come up with some idiot headline like "Avian Flew Outbreak"

  • That's a really good one!

Thanks Jen. How's the little one treating you?

  • Good! She chatted with a (stuffed animal) panda yesterday. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2738/4424917099_60d0424a54.jpg

  • bletwin

Yet another example of geese flaunting their superiority over human technology.

    They must be stopped...

  • robingee

Ten measly geese can impact the flight of a Boeing 777??

  • longacre

The route goes over the North Pole and Siberia, not places where you want to discover problems.

  • Papercutninja

apparently not. They said the engine wasn't damaged. The swapping out of planes was most likely for precautionary reasons, as well as liability reasons in case something did go wrong and also as a chance for the engine mfg to investigate the strength of their engines.

God knows how many square miles of out prestine coastline is now contaminated by jet fuel. Who will pay for the clean up?

  • longacre

Once you're above a few thousand feet, jet fuel evaporates before it hits the ground.

Great, I can see a class action suit coming for respiratory problems.
