Forget Forbidden Fromage, Is Breast Milk Gelato Next?

breastmilkgelato.jpg Have you guys heard that some lady's husband is making cheese out of her breast milk? This story will not end until everyone stamps their opinion on the forbidden fromage—the latest to cough up 2 cents: the Post's Andrea Peyser.

She doesn't try the cheese, however—instead she says the controversial product has not only violated health codes, but it's also become "a litmus test on the way people feel about the value of nursing." She sprinkles around plenty of quotes from vegan mom bloggers, anti-bottle-feeders, others she dubs as "loony," and then ever-so nonchalantly injects this piece of disturbing history: "Not very long ago, John Jacob Astor and John D. Rockefeller hired wet nurses for their own use in their old age to provide breast milk for them." (LA LA LA, we can't hear you!)

To help get that image out of your head, think about this: Peyser says Lori Mason, Chef Daniel Angerer's wife, is already pondering how else to utilize her breast milk in the kitchen, and right now Angerer may just be working on breast milk gelato. Just in time for summer! (A few years ago Ben & Jerry's declined to make Mother's Milk Ice Cream after PETA asked them to.) So, would you?

I could see a wide variety of uses for breast milk. For example: A couple ice cubes, a shot of Vodka, a shot of Kahlúa, top the glass off with breast milk straight from the teat. We'll call a Mother Russia.

  • JenChungsBaby

That's brilliant. A lactating bartender could make huge tips that way.

Enough with the breast mil by-products, already - sheesh ! Anything that causes me to agree with Andrea Peyser is by definition a horrible idea.

Wet nurses are hot. Bertolucci agrees. Anyone remember that scene in The Last Emperor?

  • mellow_fellow

I'm totally going to try mine when the time comes.
Good for you. Go back to the midwest.

  • nicemarmot

Yawn. Is that the best you can do? You really think having morons say "go back to the midwest" is worse than being IN the midwest? Why do you think everyone leaves?

And why not use Scarlett johansson's breasts instead of these pictured boobs?

  • TooTallJeff

Replace "instead of" with "in addition to" and I'm with you.

Isn't there a middle ground here? Like, I don't really want to eat cheese made out of breast milk. But I don't find breast milk itself disgusting, I'm totally going to try mine when the time comes. I wouldn't want to make cheese out of my own breast milk either. But the idea that people compare breast milk to semen or piss makes me pretty angry. It's food, not waste/reproductive products.

Urine can be used as a method of last resort to combat dehydration. Can breast milk do that? I think not.

  • Spirit of 76

Do you feed urine to infants?

Honestly, if this stuff is so dangerous, why doesn't the DOH forbid mothers from pumping milk and feeding it to their babies?

  • henryhamilton

I don't mean to judge, but this is weird and gross.

Peyset had no boobs but she does like to booze. I saw her slurring and cursing like a sailor in one of the events she covered. And damn she is fugly. Not one thing appealing on her.
