Update: Man With Toy Gun Shot And Killed By Police

UPDATE BELOW: An NYPD officer shot a man who might have "pulled out a toy gun" and "pointed it at police," according to police scanner dispatches. Details are still coming in, but multiple sources report that an officer opened fire at around 3:10 p.m. and struck a man at corner of Knapp Street and Avenue W, near P.S. 194 in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn.

CBS says it's possible the "event stemmed from a firearm in the [school] building," however a P.S. 194 parent-coordinator told ABC that the incident did not involve students at the school, where dismissal on had taken place 30 minutes prior. According to police scanner dispatches, the shooting put the man—described in one item as a "kid"—in "traumatic arrest." He was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival at Coney Island Hospital, however ABC says the man is in serious condition. After the shooting, the scanner indicates that extra police were called in for "crowd control."

An employee at Innovative Office Products, which is located across the street from the scene of the shooting, told Gothamist that the man was shot three times after he refused to drop an object that appeared to be a gun. A police spokeswoman said she could not corroborate initial reports because she had not yet been briefed on the incident.

Update (5:13 pm): An NYPD spokeswoman told Gothamist that police responded to a 911 call alerting them of a man with a gun in a schoolyard. When police arrived, the 22-year-old man pointed a firearm at the officers. One of the cops fired three times, killing the man. The spokeswoman said she is trying to confirm if the man's gun was real.

Update (5:58 pm): The Daily News reports that the man killed by police was carrying an "imitation pistol." The 22-year-old reportedly pointed a silver gun inscribed with the words "Zebra-II" at uniformed officers. A cop from 61st Precinct who has been on the force for less than two years opened fire.

    possible NYTIMES headline on wednesday.

Man with Real Gun At Gothamist Offices,

    possible hostage situation.

A metally distrubed individual claims he was upset about nytimes branding on gothamist pages and the annoying doublick redirects to popup nytimes AtHome on top of his selected page. Cops have building surrounded and have suggested installing a popup blocker while employees have huddled in the mens bathroom. Frequent readers are commenting live while Gothamist bloggers are using iphones to keep the public up to date. Gothamist scored a few jackpots during the crisis while readers assumed that postings would be delayed during the standoff. Iphones have helped them find artiles to blog-report in a psuedo journalistic endeavour that claims to report the news that has been reported elsewhere for advertising revenue. Commenters who go ballistic over park slope mommies, kicked cats and nypd tactics against minorities are still donating free opinions while sitting at home or offices, to revel in snarky comments masquerading as psuedo intellectual discourse, which provides a facade of caring and activism through keyboard input. Gothamist scored a daily trifecta by reporting a park slope mommy with a double wide stroller has blocked the entrance to a bar at 2pm, a man was arrested for kicking his girlfreinds cat in queens, and the nypd has killed another minority in a familiar scenario that escalated from over enforcement of a petty offense, in this case a man with a joint.

Gothamist spokeman speaking off the record has stated being'held hostage by a crazy gunman wont stop us from reporting the news thats been reported somewhere else already!'

  • Papercutninja

you sure spent a lot of time on that. *crickets*

  • slny

Now why would you point anything at a cop?

Actually, why would you point anything at anyone?

Why would you point something at a guy at the bus stop?

  • rcltrh

Good riddance. One less piece of trash who would have moved on to bigger and better crimes. Was he also an aspiring rapper or always such a good kid?

  • Snoopy

Victim's name is maybe George D’Amato Jr. Can't this be included in the storyline?

  • slny

What color was the dead guy?

  • bitchincamaro

What century and what southern state do you "live" in?

  • Papercutninja

Dead asshole's name is George D'Amato Jr.

    Fixed that for you.

  • Snoopy

SO WHY ISN'T ANY DESCRIPTION OF THE POOR VICTIM RELEASED? AT LEAST A NAME PERHAPS.

  • Petey

The only "poor victim" is the cop who had a gun that looked real pointed at him.

  • MEDICNYC

"When police arrived, the 22-year-old man pointed a firearm at the officers. One of the cops fired three times, killing the man."

What a poor, poor victim. Your stupid comment is just as idiotic as him pointing a pellet gun, BB gun, real gun at a police officer.

  • bitchincamaro

Suicide by cop, clearly. People who pull this shit as their last act on earth are beyond the pale. They don't deserve to live but why fuck up some young cop's life at the same time? Rot in hell, a-hole.

  • The Man Bat

"why fuck up some young cop's life at the same time?"

You say that like it's a bad thing. What's wrong with you?

  • bitchincamaro

Wait until you need one, my friend.

  • Snoopy

22 years old is hardly a kid. Why was he carrying a toy gun? Any description of the unfortunate?

    Never mind. It's politically incorrect to call a ...... a ...... today.

  • suepart

what a waste of two extra bullets when one in the dome could have done just as well for that toy gun waving stiff

  • theboneranger

  • Wza

  • 40oz.killa
