The NYPD's Most "Reliable" Undercover Vehicle

030620104rxnZ.jpg

This road-worthy addition to the NYPD's fleet of unmarked vehicles was spotted recently in Chinatown, and comes to us via Reddit. As commentors point out, it's easily ID'd by the log book, sitting like a "Hello My Name Is..." tag on the dashboard. Other ironies: the sidewalk parking job makes it less than inconspicuous, and it looks like whoever pasted the "Reliable" on used the force's regulation blue stickers. (It's surprising they make other letters besides "N," "Y," "P," and "D.") Still, we'll give the boys some credit: the photo may have been taken right outside the 5th Precinct on Elizabeth Street.

I can always tell it's a UC surveillance vehicle by the big bag of Twizzlers on the dash.

If they had any sense of humor whatsoever they would make slap a big Reliable Dry Cleaning logo on the side. I would respect that.

Similar to the MTA control center in Midtown which they went to great lengths to not identify in any way in the name of security: No MTA markings, colors or signs anywhere on the building.

That is until you get to the west side of the building, where you see MTA-marked dumpsters and MTA trucks parked everywhere.

Btw "unmarked vehicle" don't mean undercover

If it's parked by the precinct, it's pretty likely that the log book was left on the dash intentionally in lieu of a parking placard. The truck looks pretty beaten up. It's probably rarely, if ever, used.

And, if you've ever seen an NYPD car you know that the lettering is not the same, not is it that shade of blue.

    Here's a good illustration:

"nor is it that shade of blue."

  • brose

how about 'neither the lettering is the same, nor is it that shade of blue.'

  • ides_of_march

Do the undercover cops wear a big rubber nose and glasses too?

It's parked IFO a police precinct. They aren't doing organized crime surveillance with an NYPD placard or log book in the window. Take it easy.
