Yesterday Mayor Bloomberg announced (from the set of Law & Order!) a $120,000 “Made in NY” Production Crafts Training Program, which will help women and minorities in the television and movie industry "move up the ladder to well-paying union production jobs," according to the Post. The program will go into effect this spring, with about two dozen trainees learning specific labor union craft skills.

The Mayor explained, "Participants will be drawn from groups that we think should be better represented in these industries—women, minority-group members, returning veterans and economically struggling New Yorkers." Law & Order's Anthony Anderson added, "We are proud to be part of this announcement of a new program that will give talented, disadvantaged New Yorkers a chance to cultivate their skills in this industry and find a job they love and are proud of. Working in New York is privilege for all of us in the entertainment industry."

Anyone can apply for the program through www.nyc.gov in a few weeks.

News alert Mr. Mayor. The television industry in New York is currently being run by women and minorities. You need a program for men over 50.

  • inoyourider

Actually I have so you can shove your prejudices right up your ass.

Affirmative action is nothing more than discrimination in disguise.

    And discrimination is BS.

  • cosmictuesday

affirmative action policies are not discriminatory. they are there to give a leg up to people who cant get jobs because they have been DISCRIMINATED AGAINST IN THE PAST AND ARE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST IN THE PRESENT. White men have never been victims of discrimination in this country- hence why they enjoy the best jobs, best communities, and best standard of living of any people in the USA.

As a female, I have suffered callous remarks from men such as yourself, and been passed up for promotions in favor of men far less qualified than I. I bet you have never experienced that.

  • cosmictuesday

whoa. i work in this industry, and I can tell all of you asshats that I rarely see a minority, and there are very few females. instead, most of the union members are white males. so dont cry about giving white males more jobs- white males have it easier than anyone else in this city, and are no better than minorities or women at doing any particular job, except for whining about how life is so hard.

this is not a racist or sexist policy, as white men have NO problem getting jobs in this industry.

  • inoyourider

Oh, so you're saying that in this case because the discrimination goes against white males, that it's okay.

This program IS BOTH racist and sexist as it defines its targets in those terms.

    Nice job, asshat.

Doesn't matter where you work or what you know, racism is racism.

  • verbal

Scumbag midget douchebag has gone out of his way kill production in this city, and now throws this stupid program out to appease the industry. faggot hypocrite liar megalomaniac fuckface.

  • JacqueMehoff

120K? didn't the industry go through that in a day when the state and city gave them tax breaks and other favors?

and what color were those with their hand out?

  • inoyourider

Did that money come with stipulations about the race or gender of the recipients?

  • S.K.

What about all the unemployed white male voters?

  • Snoopy

"two dozen trainees learning specific labor union craft skills." Do you mean a bunch of ethnics sitting on their asses and getting union wages?

Isn't the city so much better with this program?

  • justthinkin

First Bloomberg has Kelly put minorities behind bars. Now he puts them behind cameras. I guess that's called progress.

  • inoyourider

This is openly racist/sexist and no one cares...

Guess it's not discriminating against anyone that the bleeding hearts care about.

  • inoyourider

I bet if it were a program that benefited white males the Gothamist title would be a hell of a lot different.

"Misogynist, Racist NYC Program to Receive 120,000 in city funds with Mayor Bloomberg's blessing."

    Fucking hypocrites.

  • Snoopy

I always like a joke thrown in once and a while.
