Rapper Guru In Coma In NYC

gurugangstarr.jpg The 43-year-old rapper Guru, of Gang Starr fame, reportedly suffered a massive heart attack in New York City over the weekend and has been left in a coma since. He will undergo surgery today.

A trumpeter named Brownman, who has played with Guru for three years in Jazzmatazz, told AllHipHop "Please include him in your thoughts and hopes for recovery. They say it's lonely at the top, in whatever you do, you always gotta watch motherfuckers around you, Nobody's invincible, no plan is foolproof, we all must meet our moment of truth."

The rapper has been living in Jersey City, and was ranked #45 in the Top 50 MCs of our time—check him out in action after the jump. He recently hinted on Twitter that there may be new Gang Starr material released.

UPDATE: It appears that AllHipHop, for some reason, actually printed their exclusive quote from Brownman in combination with his Facebook status, which was a Gang Starr quote. His quote should have just read: "After touring the globe standing next to Guru on stage for the last 3 years, I can't imagine a world without Bald Head Slick."

Gangstarr is one of the greatest rap groups of all time. I can't say I like any of his material post Gangstarr but the man deserves a lot of respect for being a cornerstone of the golden age of hip hop.

    "jazz/r&b/rap musicians"

Incoherent stuff is the purview of just those kind of artists? Is that what you mean?

And BTW, Gang Starr has some awesome lyrics.

  • 99centmenu

jesus christ people, he's quoting a line from "moment of truth," one of the best records that gang starr ever put out.

  • no one

The quote was a lyric in one of Guru's songs.

  • Jamie McDonald

Yeah, it's lonely at the top. If by the top, you mean being a has-been rapper from some group that no one cares about except your roommate at Wesleyan who was really into "indie hip-hop" for about six weeks during your sophomore year.

Not trying to take the piss out of this guy, and I hope he gets better; just annoyed when jazz/r&b/rap musicians say incoherent, meaningless shit like "Brownman" did above and it's supposed to be all profound or something.

GangStarr was on a major label and quite mainstream, definitely not indie.

  • kendoqv2k

real hip hop heads know Gang Starr is legendary.

  • CR

Bad start to the week. Speedy recovery brother.

  • jt10000

Gang Starr (Guru and Premiere) are so good and so under-rated.

Best wishes to Guru for a strong recovery.

What in the heck does that quote even mean??!

    Also, get better dude.

  • JenChungsBaby

He meant to say "in whatever you do, you always gotta watch coronary arteries inside you."

  • Ph

Those anatomical motherfuckers like to come up real quick before they start to clown.

You best pull out your Crestor and lay those busters down.

    Or something to that effect.
