Will New York—Errr…New Jersey—Host The Superbowl?

2007_09_meadowlands1.jpg

After Arizona decided it didn't want to host the Superbowl due to security concerns, the Meadowlands has become the front-runner for 2014's big game. According to the Post, the new Giants and Jets facility is now the leading contender because "Tampa and South Florida—which held the past two Super Bowls—are the only other bidders."

In past years, the Superbowl has been played in warm weather cities or cold weather cities with domed stadiums. But the Times notes that since owners waived a weather requirement requiring temperate cities or a stadiums with roofs, "victory for the Meadowlands seemed like a foregone conclusion."

Though wintry weather is always a risk in New York in February, NFL Commissioner Roger Gooddell has stated: "Playing in the elements is central to the way the game of football is played. I think being able to do that and celebrate the game of football in the No. 1 market could have tremendous benefits.” League officials will make a final decision in the coming months.

So here's a stupid question... how do you do the halftime show if it's snowy and freezing? do you make whatever aged rock band they dig out of their graves actually play in the cold?

  • S.K.

Oh, those poor freezing cheerleaders. Have some compassion.

Perfect opportunity to nix two annoying things at once.

I love it - Arizona didn't want to host because of security concerns. What a bunch of pussies!

  • NannyState

They didn't want the expense. That state has a huge deficit.

  • MrManhattan

Why not have American Football play the their "Superbowl" in the home of the East Rutherford Giants and the East Rutherford Jets?

They can call it the "Toilet Bowl"!

  • whitecastlerock

Why the sudden hard on for the swamps of New Jersey hosting the Super Bowl? Playing in the elements is central to the way the game of football is played. I think being able to do that and celebrate the game of football in the No. 1 market could have tremendous benefits. BULLSHIT! this is all about money.

  • matty

Great idea. Midwest and Northeast teams have to compete mostly in the elements (save Minneapolis and Indie) I don't see why we should keep accomodating domed and/or warm weather sports teams just cause they're too primped to catch a ball in the rain or snow.

  • neckbeard

it has nothing to do with that. it's all about money. warm weather = more people, more activities, interviews, bullshit concerts and celebrity stuff.

  • jaycjay

Exactly. The Super Bowl hasn't been really about the game in a long time. So, if you're a fan of a team in a smaller cold-weather market without a roof on your stadium, don't think this means it will ever come to your city. They'll consider the NYC area because the event will be huge and hugely profitable here no matter what the weather, but that doesn't mean the same would hold true in, say, Cincinnati.

  • matty

I'm not talking about markets, I'm talking about if the Super Bowl was held at Meadowlands or Gillette or even San Francisco the open air component of the game would make it much more enjoyable to watch. The elements are part of the game. I mean, the Bears or Pack couldn't be considered "cold weather teams" if they didn't have any cold weather to begin with. It would make for interesting matchups.

  • jaycjay

I agree, absolutely. I love football in cold weather. I hate football under a roof. That doesn't change the fact that whatever you and I are talking about, it is about markets. There will never be a Super Bowl game in Buffalo, Green Bay, Cleveland... the NFL isn't thinking about putting the game in Giants Stadium because they suddenly think that it should be played in wintry weather, they're doing it because they know that especially with the new stadium there's a lot of money to be made here.

  • matty

Yeah that and to debut the new stadium. So yeah, even if they had it at meadowlands as often as they had it at (whatever the fuck miami's stadium is now called) I think it would be great to have New York as a large market plus a city with actual weather to host the matchups!

    :D

  • nicemarmot

Hell yeah, a snowy Superbowl would be awesome.

  • NannyState

    You mean a smelly Superbowl.
