Schools Closed, Government Offices Open, Transit Delays

Snow day! For New York City Public Schools, anyway (and colleges and universities—Columbia, NYU, New School, SVA are closed!). After previously saying that NYC public schools would be open today despite the snow, the Department of Education has changed course and closed schools for the day. After school activities and all PSAL events are also canceled. It's the second time schools have been closed for snow this month.Time to pull out that snow gear again for some more fun in the parks (which are dangerous)! City offices, however, will remain open.

The MTA says "subways, buses, railroads and bridges & tunnels are scheduled to operate at normal or near normal morning rush hour service levels." But subways do have the "cold weather service plan" in effect, impacting some service. As of this time, the MTA's website says only the J/M/Z line is affected. The Staten Island Ferry is running a three-boat schedule with boats every 20 minutes through 9AM.

NJ Transit buses are not running in Northern New Jersey, but NJT rail lines are honoring bus passes. The LIRR is planning regular service, but check their site for updates. Metro North is operating on a Winter Weather Schedule, with schedule changes on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines. If you're planning on flying out of an area airport, check with your airline for cancellations and delays.

For the February 10 Snowmageddon, the city called a snow day the day before. We'll see if people complain that today's snow day was announced too late!

stay home watch the USA vs. Finland ice hockey game, it's on NBC. Sweden is out of it this time.

Now now guys, don't expose the Gothamist editors and their commenters to the rough and tumble insanity that is the D.C. Commentariat. They get what, 10 comments on a good day?

That said - SUCK IT, NY! You can't handle snow of this magnitude!

  • RedDot

Seriously. You guys are a bunch of whiny crybabies. Call me when you get 3-4' of snow. Then we can talk.

  • NewHCE

So where are all the people screaming how DC "couldn't deal" with our TWO snowstorms of this magnitude?

  • mmlanglie

Seriously...I walked in the street this morning to avoid the foot high snow on the sidewalks and promptly biffed it. Be careful out there...nicmarmot is completely right--that slushy stuff yesterday has frozen solid and is hiding under all of the snow!

I did make it to work though! Actually quicker than normal because the subways are moving along so quickly with low-ridership.

  • nicemarmot

This is waaaay worse than the last one, all that slush from yesterday has half-solidified under the powdery snow. How the hell did the snow turn powdery?? Remember how wet it was yesterday? Bizarre!

Still not really that bad, though staying off the road is definitely advisable.

I wandered into my office(early even!) because I simply have to much shit to do and can't push it off.

  • elpollodiablo

I called a snow day for myself since I was the _only_ one to go to the office during the last Snowpocalypse.

I really didn't think it was gonna be this bad; coming home to Wburg from Alphabet City at ~midnight last night was epic as hell.

I made it into work, and I'm counting on Gothamist to entertain me all day.

Just from the view out of my windows/front door (south Brooklyn), it looks worse than Snowmageddon. The streets are a foot deep in snow and the sidewalk hasn't been touched. Boss said my office is closed. Sweet! Now I get to...clean my apartment. *sad trombone*

The moment I got the text from my office saying that we were down for the day, I did a Snow Day Happy Dance.

And then I cleaned the bathroom.

You're not alone, but I am going outside a little later to play. We just don't get too many days like this--I mean historically, not recently.
