Fire Inspector Signed Off On Boilers, Never Looked At Them

An FDNY fire prevention inspector has been accused of claiming he was inspecting boilers when he was really just sitting in his car. Robert Stewart, 40, has been hit with 38 counts of falsifying records for lying about examining boilers in 19 Queens residences when he would actually just fill out the necessary paperwork without leaving his vehicle.

Authorities from the city's Department of Investigation and the FDNY learned that Stewart never checked to see if the boilers met the city's fire code, according to ABC. "This inspector fundamentally breached his professional duty to enforce fire safety rules and maintain truthful records and needlessly risked safety," said DOI Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn. Stewart, an FDNY employee since 1999, has been suspended without pay, according to the Daily News.

It doesn't matter what the agency is. As long as governmental agencies aren't subjected to external audits, they will always cook the books to tell us everything is perfect. Think about it next time they tell you crime is down, school scores are up and budget is just peachy keen.

A little bit disingenuous of Gothamist to run this story amidst all this racial/gender/firehouse closing controversy. I'm sure any responsible journalist would've noted while using the FDNY logo/medallion that fire prevention workers have NOTHING to do with the firefighting aspect of the fdny, and if anything, the two positions are adversaries.

Right you are. Fire code inspectors are civilians and have little to no relationship to the real FDNY. That's why they hire the ethnics to do the job.

The FDNY does boiler inspections? Jeez, I better get mine up to code...or move to Queens.
