Health Care Summit LIVE

2010_02_obamahc.jpg President Obama is meeting with both Democrats and Republicans at a health care summit today. You can see live video of the talks after the jump, but to bring you up to speed, the NY Times reports that Obama, in his opening remarks (which came from a teleprompter-less table), "called on the two parties to abandon their talking points and engage in a real unscripted discussion." Republican Senator Lamar Alexander asked Obama to abandon "reconciliation" and start over while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) said there's no time to start over.

Americans need to wake up. We have one of the worst health care systems in the industrial world. Yet, by reading some of the posted comments we seem to be trivializing the entire health care debate. We Americans have to start engaging in an intelligent debate. We cannot call America the greatest nation when we have an abominable health care system. Some senators seem to be in the pocket of the health care industry that is why the opposition. If Senator Evan Bayh were honest - he would admit to the real reason why he is is not running - isn't his wife is on the board of Wellpointe. "Over the last six years, Susan Bayh has received at least $2 million in compensation from WellPoint alone for serving on its board." One house cannot serve two (2) masters.

(Obama get up from his chair) A man becomes preeminent, he's expected to have enthusiasms. Enthusiasms, enthusiasms... What are mine? What draws my admiration? What is that which gives me joy? (He picks up a Louisville Slugger next to his chair.) Baseball! (Nervous laughter around the room. He rests the bat against his shoulder and starts to casually walk around the conference table.) A man stands alone at the plate. This is the time for what? For individual achievement. There he stands alone. But in the field, what? Part of a team. (Obama pats Harry Reid on the shoulder.) Teamwork... Looks, throws, catches, hustles. Part of one big team. (Murmurs and nods of agreement. Obama pats Nancy Pelosi on the shoulder. They smile at each other.) Bats himself the live-long day, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, A-Rod, and so on. If his team don't field... what is he? You follow me? No one. (Murmurs of agreement. Lamar Alexander smiles at Obama, slightly smirking.) Sunny day, the stands are full of fans. What does he have to say? (Obama stands behind Alexander.) I'm goin' out there for myself. But... I get nowhere unless the team wins. (Obama takes the bat and violently clubs Alexander 3-4 times. Murmurs and looks of shock. Jospeh Biden mutters "Oh, for Christ's sake..." Alexander lies face down on the table, blood pooling on his briefing book.) Now then, I'd like to address the single payer option, if there are no objections...

Narrator: And then I wake up.

Thank you - I am in awe !

Is there a place where you can stream the audio, without the video? I can't watch anyway because I'm working and video takes up more bandwidth, you know how it goes.

  • JacqueMehoff

does CSPAN radio have a website that streams the audio?

  • Schooled

Louise Slaughter is my kind of politician. I'm laughing and rejoicing about what our president is doing to our nation. Creating a summit that the public will actually watch (sorry cspan) holds everyone on all sides accountable in an entirely new light.

    Awesome.

    Health savings accounts??? what?

why do the republicans always solve money with more money?

health savings accounts is neither health nor savings.

  • Pachinko

The rest of the world is laughing and rejoicing at what this President is doing to our nation.

  • hotstepper

huh, i thought your kind cares nothing about what the rest of the world thinks.

this is 'merica, god & country, get'er done, drill baby drill, etc.

  • Spirit of 76

Don't worry. I'm sure idesofmarch will be here presently to back him up.

  • Mizuki

Don't you mean the rest of the world is laughing at us because we're the only industrialized nation NOT to have national health care because of our backwater Republican party?

You sound like you don't really get out much, but the left in America would be considered "moderate" in Europe. And the right in America is just considered crazy.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

what did he do? Bush/Cheney put us in 2 wars that won't end and with their tax cuts for the rich and deregulation has bankrupt this country. Of course the teabaggers don't bother with history but with color.

  • longacre

What they're doing IS laughable and generally pointless if there's no "public option."

  • vino

    @felix

exactly my point! Panchiko comment comes off as being snarky as someone who had the unfortunate pleasure of living in europe for most of W's first term people in Europe are crying tears of joy that most of came to our senses and elected a man with a vision.

  • vino

please explain? I thnk you have him (obama) confused with another person.
