Jury Deciding Natavia Lowery's Fate: GUILTY

Natavia Lowery, and her inside-out pants
[UPDATE BELOW] Natavia Lowery's trial has come to a close after four weeks, and the jury is currently deliberating where this young lady will go next! In 2007 she was accused of killing her boss—real estate agent to the stars and former manager of the Ramones—Linda Stein. Since then it's been a long road that's included confessions, retracted confessions, yoga sticks, ninjas, and so much more.

Yesterday in the courtroom, Lowery's lawyer Thomas Giovanni re-enacted what he believed the murder of Stein looked like. The NY Times reports back saying he was "crouching and smacking the floor 22 times to represent the number of times she was struck while on the ground. As Mr. Giovanni did this, one of Ms. Stein’s daughters, Samantha, sitting in the gallery, broke down and hurried out, her younger sister, Mandy, following close behind."

According to the Daily News, the jury must now decide if Lowery is "guilty of intentional murder, which carries a 25-year sentence," or manslaughter.

Earlier this month we were the first to report that Lowery's pants were different in the surveillance video that was being shown during the trial—later a commenter pointed out that the difference was they were turned inside out. Until that point the prosecution hadn't mentioned this, though we're told that they, and the NYPD, were on to the damning detail long ago.

UPDATE: The jury has convicted Lowery of second-degree murder. It was the top charge against Lowery, and she now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, City Room reports.

“Here is wisdom, let he who hath understanding…” What I believe you had here was the VERY unfortunate phenomenon of NY liberal middle-age pot smoking Jewish guilt, a fellow traveler from the 60s rock ‘n’ roll civil-right’s era who repeats the mantra “the blacks suffered like the Jews did and therefore I must put up with someone whom I DO NOT LIKE and probably HATE but instead of confronting my feelings (which for all we know were probably justified) and hiring someone else I will instead blow pot smoke in her face and humiliate her.” I’ve seen this phenomenon many times AND will unfortunately will see it again.

    WTF Gothamist?!?!

  • potsmoker

funny how everyone is bashing this girl, but nobody is wishing they had Linda Stein back on earth.

she must have been a real wackjob!

    this was in the nytimes:

She was the kind of person who ends up with a lot of spit in her food after being rude to “the servants.” When I first read that she was beaten to death, all I could think was, “How did she live that long without that happening to her long ago?” I never met ANYONE who liked her in those days,

  • Papercutninja

Just because she was an unlikeable bitch doesn't mean someone should beat her to death. If that were true, Park Slope would be devoid of stroller moms.

  • Rocko

Killing white cracker porkies is a crime? She should get probation for a month... What is that white old crumbled cracker saying from her grave? Im deeeeead biiiitch!! (rick james)

  • Papercutninja

Congratulations on using a 5 year old reference that was overexposed 5 years ago.

Note to self: Never hire a hood rat assistant in order to cut corners...

  • 25 years. She would have got alot less where I am from. We had a case where a man got 7 years for killing his wife.

  • bluerain

Keep in mind that they could not conclusively prove that she killed Stein.

She was lucky that she killed her in NY and not AL (or else she would die.)

I fear that someday I'll be convicted because juries are stupid and racist and just want to go home most of the time.

  • Clarice City

Well then tell your "community" to pull their shit together get a job, stay with the mothers of their children and stop committing most of the crimes in this city.

  • JenChungsBaby

Let's see...she admitted stealing $30,000 from the victim, who was going to turn her in. She was seen on video in the victim's home at the time of the murder. She hauled some kind of heavy concealed object out of the victim's home. And she clearly wore her pants inside out while leaving the crime scene.

And what else? Hmmmmmm. Oh Yeah! She confessed to the crime! Told investigators all about it, how it happened and what motivated her to do it. Then she retracted that and made up some story about ninjas.

The state easily proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt to 12 people, who took less than 4 hours to find her guilty. Your doubts are not reasonable.

Jen I would suggest opening the picture of her in photoshop and go to the auto contrast feature.

  • Coolo

Yes Kudos to Jen Carlson You were the 1st to state changed pant. Kudos for having the faith in your readers and listening to their inputs.
