On Staten Island a young man was allegedly caught with homemade bombs under his winter coat, and officials want him and all the other bomb hobbyists out there to know that's not OK. "I made it," John McCloskey told cops, according to the Staten Island Advance. "I'll show it to you. I'm going to prank my friend with it." The 19-year-old allegedly claimed that video tutorials showed him how to make a bomb out of wire, nails, metal and gunpowder. At his arraignment today, McCloskey will be charged with first-degree criminal possession. “Although this defendant claims that the [device] he manufactured was intended as a prank and not to be used, this was clearly a dangerous situation with the capacity to injure many people,” said DA Daniel Donovan in a press release. “There is nothing humorous about attempting to manufacture a bomb."

It would only be funny if he blew his hands off making the bomb.

I had a few friends in high school who were into making bombs and blowing up trees in central park. This was in the late 80's early 90's. It was just a stupid punk ass prank back then, and I'm pretty sure kids have been doing it ever since the invention of gunpowder. Now it's a "terrorist act." Please. Don't believe the hype. You're being lied to.

How's life under that rock treating you? It ain't the 90's anymore, my friend. How stupid does a person have to be to try to palm this off as a prank given the age we live in? He's probably lucky he got caught...jerks like this usually blow themselves up by accident.

  • SP

"given the age we live in?"

HAHA moron. You clearly haven't been paying attention, nor are you very learned in history. You need to go back to school and do yourself some book learnin' before making more idiotic comments such as these.

And that's a bad thing? I look at it as improving the gene pool.

a "bomb hobbyist"? That's almost as lame as a "railfan".

This guy soundsreal dangerous. glad the police have taken him off the streets. Theres no way this was just a prank. He looks like a real punk kid too. We live in a dangerous world b/c of idiots like him.

"There is nothing humorous about attempting to manufacture a bomb."

I disagree. Attempting is funny, especially when you're caught. Succeeding is not.

If you look at a map, Staten Island is just a bridge away from Jersey- much farther than it is to NYC. Let's give Staten Island to Jersey, where it belongs.

    Please.

Whats this? I thought only muslims could make bombs, thats why we sterotype them. I'm confused.

Will he be sent away to jail even though he's not muslim? its supposed to be Equal justice for all, right?

  • longacre

There's a concept called "motive" which comes into play.

  • nicemarmot

Building a bomb without blowing anything is up with it would be like cooking yourself a delicious 8-course dinner and then letting it rot on the table while you sit there starving. Never happens.
