Are You Free As A Bird To Feed Pigeons In Parks?

phpv0Ly5lAM.jpg Like jaywalking on city streets, it seems that the anti-bird feeding rules in city parks aren't enforced. According to the NY Post, the people who are supposed to enforce park rules only gave out five $50 tickets last year for bird feeding... out of 18,876 summonses and violations issued in total. And the Parks Department allegedly told the paper, "It's OK to feed the pigeons as long as there are no signs saying you can't."

In 2007, the NY Times wrote that, "Despite a common public perception, there is no law that makes pigeon feeding illegal everywhere in the city. That said, the Parks Department posts notices prohibiting feeding in many areas under its control. If you ignore the sign, you may get an Environmental Control Board summons from the parks enforcement patrols or from the Police Department."

Of course, if it's just going unenforced, bird lovers may want to have their guards up, because some civilians are taking the law into their own hands. Just last week a 63-year-old bird lover was attacked after (legally) feeding pigeons on the sidewalk!

Just a reminder to all that it is PERFECTLY LEGAL to feed pigeons in New York City. Various entities and owners may post signs asking individuals not to feed; in that case, simply move a few feet away. Document with phone camera the prudent amount of bird seed that you put out; it should be gone in a snap. Thus, it is not littering. Graffiti--now there's an annoying and somewhat permanent alteration of the landscape!

I feed the birds, rescue and rehabilitate them on occasion, and celebrate others who recognize the specialness of the pigeon. They are smart, and each has a unique personality. Unfortunately, and unknown to most people, pigeons don't fare well in the city, where they choose to live. The are dependent on humans for food; most pigeons are severely malnourished. Serious disease often underlies a "fluffy" appearance. Their starvation, in fact, is what motivates them to chase after scraps of food in the streets. Keep in mind that dried pieces of bagel and pizza crust are not the food choices of the pigeon.

Have a heart, people. Relax and find out what it feels like to be compassionate.

Oh, and yes, I give assistance freely to people living on the street (money, food, clothing), so please spare us all the diatribes and tired cliches about "people-hating."

    Ridiculous.

    man, people are really dumb!

To demonize living creatures in the city! pigeons?!

Any animal that lives in the city out if its own survival strategies are "plague"?

The good thing about all this: people that can not discern between plagues such as cockroaches and rats form all other animals are just DUMB.

The only way pigeons can affect a human is if this human feasts on their poop.

  • PigeonHaterForLife

You are an idiot if you think pigeons only affect humans if we eat their shit. They ruin property. They carry disease. Feeding them only makes them breed at an accellerated rate. If you don't feed them they go where they can find food elsewhere and will live there. If you live in a place like New York where every lonely old fart thinks they have found friends in these very persistent pests you might understand.

    Dumb? Dumb are we?

This from someone who lists herself in her profile as a "genius".

Typical PETA people-hating mentality and hubris.

I´m going to second you being dumb. Well, either dumb or emotionally disturbed.

I mean, what kind of idiot-freak gets angry about little old ladies feeding pigeons?

Will you stop will your continue FAIL logic. In your world, there is no room for compassion for other species. Loving other specie doesn't mean hating humans but means being HUMANe. For goodness sake, you're a broken record. Your song is off tune. please adjust

  • thefacts

Why would you bother to defend someone who generalizes that those who disagree with her are "dumb", but she is sometimes, a "genius"?

You don't see a sense of superiority, hubris, exaggeration and self-righteousness at play here?

Believe it or not, the New York Bird Club has managed to host two National Pigeon Day events in Central Park. The club wants to clear up misconceptions about this flying pest. It even made it into New York magazine. I wrote about it in :National Pigeon Day. Again. I'm Not Kidding. When I commented on nymag.com, I got a vitriolic response from a PETA-head. I don't normally link to my own stuff, but in this case, it might be amusing to readers.

the posting was idiotic. pigeons are one of the most intelligent of all the bird species man. Do some basic research before you blog about something that you know nothing about.

    http://www.deterapigeon.com/21-amazing-facts-about-pigeons.htm

Pigeons are considered to be one of the most intelligent birds on the planet with pigeons being able to undertake tasks previously thought to be the sole preserve of humans and primates. The pigeon has also been found to pass the ‘mirror test’ (being able to recognise its reflection in a mirror) and is one of only 6 species, and the only non-mammal, that has this ability. The pigeon can also recognise all 26 letters of the English language as well as being able to conceptualise. In scientific tests pigeons have been found to be able to differentiate between photographs and even differentiate between two different human beings in a photograph when rewarded with food for doing so.

I'm sorry. I should clarify: I don't hate pigeons. I just don't celebrate them. Rats are also highly intelligent. I had a pet rat. I think rats are lovable and misunderstood. But I understand that some city residents do not want them being fed along with the birds. That's all. I'm not advocating pigeon murder--I just think Pigeon Day is absurd.

Anyone know where to get a copy of that poster?

  • thefacts

Isn't it littering? Why not enforce the littering law?

  • nicemarmot

Apparently throwing garbage all over the ground is not illegal if you're doing it to feed the vermin.

  • Amanda Harletsch

interesting how the "litter" disappears after a handful of pigeons eat it, isn't it!?

Wouldn't pigeons be cleaning the sidewalks then, rather than haunting you in your dreams?

If you were to look deeper in the everyday social interactiosn perhaps you'd find other causes to take action than merely getting annoyed by birds.
