NYC Students Raise Funds To Visit Holocaust Sites

2010_02_ausch.jpg The Daily News reports that, after studying about the Holocaust, nine black and Latino students at High School for Law Advocacy and Community Justice are raising money for a European tour of death camps and other WWII spots. One sophomore told the News she used to laugh at Hasidic Jews on the subway, but no more: "I learned about the Holocaust and I know what they went through... I never made fun of Jews again." Their teacher added, "Our students are inner-city minorities... For them to see the oppression of other groups, especially a white group, it is an eye-opener for them." They still need to raise $17,000 by March 15.

this is what we've learned from the holocaust

Dr. Martin Kramer, a fellow at Harvard's National Security Studies Program, has posted a speech he delivered two weeks ago in Israel in which he urged solving the Palestinian refugee problem by population control i.e "stopping pro-natal subsidies to Palestinians with refugee status."

That will help reduce the terrorist threat by preventing Palestinian babies from becoming "superfluous young men." It is, Kramer says, those "superfluous young men" who become radicals.

amazing. this from a HARVARD fellow. unfortunately no ones learned anything from the holocaust.

Sounds like the Nazi policy in occupied Poland 1939-45

  • dgeee

Haven't you people heard? Jews were the only ones to die in WWII.

  • LB

Thank you for further illustrating my point ! They Bitch to much ! It's to the point of feeling sorry for them .

  • Greenpoint60

You don't see the Polish Dwelling on the fact that some of their people were slaughtered,

Not so, Come to Greenpoint baby, its a big time issue on Sept 1st Warsaw in Aug 1944 makes 9-11 look tiny.

  • LB

Yes that's all well and good ! But it ain't on the level that Jews do it .

  • Greenpoint60

LB the world has changed with the internet, today young people can perform a Google search and will soon become aware that millions of others were victims of deliberate extermination in WW2, not only the Jews. This was not the case in the 1980’s when the Rubber Room was able to determine what students read.

  • rasputinsghost

agreed, poles love to talk about how they got massacred...throughout their entire history

  • LB

See this is one of the glaring problems with our society . We dwell on the past and not the future . Ok so Millions of Jews were killed by the Nazi's, Ok so you mourn, remember then move on . We all have tragedies that occur within our bloodlines , It's important to remember them , AND Learn from those mistakes to create a better future . But come on with this now, You don't see the Polish Dwelling on the fact that some of their people were slaughtered, Or Blacks Dwelling about All that happened with Slavery . What about Jesus ? Or the Native Americans ? Or for that matter any other race that has gone through any type of genocide. Jews are the only ones still dwelling on there Genocide . Move on people !

  • fuboy

uhh, you're really off base LB.

Native Americans have used the destruction of their people to open Casinos and make sure the land they live on is not governed by US law.

Just last night I was listening to a comedy routine of an African American gentleman. Part of his shtick was about the duration of time slavery was allowed to happen on these shores and how, even since the 18th amendment was passed, 'The Man' keeps black people down. The applause was an uproar, because the predominantly black audience agreed.

As for Jesus, every damn time I walk past a church I see a crucifix. How can you say that Catholics don't dwell on Jesus's oppression when their prominent symbol is the man dying from that oppression?

  • LB

That's part of a routine for a black comic . It's as you referred "Schtick" . It's not meant to be taken seriously , It's a joke, You know mix in a tragic-life altering event with currently available commentary, and combine it all with a refreshing punchline . Result (Hopefully) Laughter . Baaaazingggggggggggggggggggggg !

  • LB

How am I off-base ? Jews are the only one you see bitching about this every chance they get . How many memorials do you know of dedicated to non Jews over the world ? How many countries do you know of that have been badgered into Apologizing for whatever roles there people play in that genocide ? Do you realize that to this day there are those that are still searching for anybody still alive from Nazi Germany to charge them with genocide ! I'm not saying that people should morn the dead, But It's time to stop using it to guilt everybody into feeling sorry for them . As for the Native Americans, Yes they do talk about it , But it's nowhere near as crisis as it is with Jews . Maybe the world should give them a holiday just for them . Maybe that will "Ease" the pain . Just a little .

  • wingedearth

In October 1919, they also claimed that six million were killed by Germans during World War I. No one bought it the first time around.

  • rasputinsghost

no better way to start a morning than hear internet wingnuts deny genocide

  • Tricksta

Well, you do have a choice. Gothamist is going fast from being an interesting site reporting on news and events in and around NYC to being a pathetic POS stomping ground for lowlifes, losers, and self-styled "experts" on every part of the political spectrum (including the FarLeft *cough!*)

But I do like to read th comments every now & then to get an good laugh.. and to see how out of touch NY has become with the rest of the world.

  • wingedearth

I'm not affirming or denying anything. Just exploring and discussing. And it's a waste of time to just take the majority view.

  • Greenpoint60

Those students should be going to West Africa to study the history of the slave trade.

Slave trading was a major feature of Jewish economic life in Surinam which as a major stopping-off point in the triangular trade. Both North American and Caribbean Jews played a key role in this commerce

  • potsmoker

good point, as a veteran of the nyc public school system.

i always wondered why a nation built on slavery ignores it own history.

  • Greenpoint60

My hunch is that the fat swine in the Rubber Room are the ones that create the curriculum

Let's keep the following in mind:

Millions of Russian POWs were sent to Auschwitz, but many others escaped imprisonment by collaborating.

Many gays were sent to Dachau, but many others hid in the closet to avoid imprisonment.

Many Poles were sent to Maidanek, but many others participated in the anti-Jewish pogroms.

Jews and Gypsies stood alone, because they were marked for total extermination. When my grandfather fought in the Red Army, he knew the following:

If his unit surrendered, his Russian comrades could stay alive by switching sides to "Vlasov's army," a pro-Nazi unit. But as a Jew, he would not have that option. He would have been sent straight to the gas chambers. So he fought as if his life depended on it. And he won the war.
