Meow! Russian Skater's Sour Grapes

2010_02_iceskat.jpg Last night, American Evan Lysacek won the gold medal for men's figure skating (the first American gold in the competition since Brian Boitano in 1988). The 2006 Olympic champion Yevgeny Plushenko skated a less-than-clean performance and settled for silver even though he completed a difficult quadruple jump and he said of Lysacek's triple-filled program, "If the Olympic champion doesn't know how to jump a quad, I don't know. Now it's not men's figure skating. It's dancing. Maybe figure skating needs a new name."

Mens figure skating? I'd rather watch golf.

"Now it's not men's figure skating. It's dancing. Maybe figure skating needs a new name."

I guess he has a bit of a point, actually. Most Olympic sports are won strictly by physical results, not aesthetics. They're about speed, distance, time, weight. Volleyball, slalom, ski jumping, swimming, track and field, bicycling, speed skating, weightlifting, tennis, baseball, etc. The end result is the only thing that matters, not how the competitors looked during competition. The only exceptions I can think of off the top of my head are diving, gymnastics and figure skating, basically any sport where judges do anything more than call a foul. The ancient Olympics had no events which would be won by how graceful the competitor looked. Maybe "ice gymnastics" or something would be a more appropriate name for the event Plushenko wants.

girls can be so mean sometimes

Plushenko can go grab a bottle of vodka and cry US the Volga River.

I can't think of any other Olympic event where the athletes are allowed to pick their own clothes with no flag colors reflected. I hope that in 50 years people will look back at a time when ice skaters wore little dresses and dressy tights and marvel. Plushenko complains about his skating not being rewarded and that the sport is further devolving into "dancing" - doesn't he think that dressing all sparkly like has a role in that?

I'm no expert, but based purely on style and GOE, 1,2, and 3 were, indeed, 1,2 and 3. That Japanese boy really impressed me, though.

Nice to see that Russia hasn't lost its talent for sour grapes whining, lol. So basically anybody who lands a quad should win gold? I don't think so. I don't know much about skating but I watched the men's program last night and Plushenko did nothing but jumps, there was no artistry or transition or even a sense of fun to his routine, it was kinda boring. Figure skating is a combination of athleticism and artistry and Lysacek had the whole package. Go watch their routines on the NBC Olympics site and see for yourself. The right man won gold.

Are you calling him a faggot? Is that what you're doing? What does that make you? An asshole? A bigot? An illiterate, inbread, redneck, low-life, trailer-park, infantile turd? At least have the balls to come out and say what you mean.

  • NannyState

I see what you did there!

  • theevilone

Screw 'em both. Johnny Weir should have landed on the medal podium!

  • PKMKII

The problem with Weir's routine is that it lacked the difficulty that Lysacek, Plushenko, and Takahashi's routines had. The base value for Weir's elements was only 73.21, as compared to 74.93 for Lysacek and 75.03 for Plushenko. Takahashi's base value was only 70.28 (due to the botched quad), but his program component numbers were much stronger than anyone else's.

Takahashi was a real pro. He had great polish and flair.

  • S_R

Johnny was robbed of a bronze, in my opinion.

  • longacre

Johnny Weir is a walking stereotype.

  • youngpro

johnny weir belongs more on Idol than the effing Olympics. He's an attention queen.

  • youngpro

he also whined and cried when he lost to the chinese KID at the smuckers event. what a baby, seriously.

  • Brado

TOTALLY agree! Both of his programs were damn near flawless. They should have ranked him higher.

  • duckumu

i agree. he gave a bronze model performance. he was underscored by 5 points in each of his programs IMO which would have put him around bronze.
