Bulldog Dies On Delta Flight

poorpup0210.jpg A sad story comes over the Craigslistwire, where a poster says a 19 month old English Bulldog died on a Delta flight Wednesday night. They posted photos of the dog, postmortem, and say the NY ASPCA refuses to get involved, claiming it's a civil matter and they don't handle airport deaths. The dog was found dead, allegedly having froze to death, after the plane landed at JFK airport.

Last month another puppy froze to death on a flight bound for the same airport. There are temperature restrictions "to ensure animals are not exposed to extreme heat or cold in the animal holding areas, terminal facilities, when moving the animals between terminal and aircraft or on an aircraft"—so why does this keep happening? We've contacted the APSCA as well as Delta for comment, and will update when we hear back.

Cargo holds are no place for dogs. Especially Bulldogs that have extra skin in their throats, short noses and cannot breathe in extreme temps. If you must fly and cannot take the dog on board try Pet airways. They fly just pets with attendants that are with them and walk them between flights.

He could have frozen to death or been slammed with other luggage on takeoff or landing. The blood from the nose is suspicious. More like a head injury or pressure.

    www.petairways.com.

There are also many rescue groups that do cross country trips. Generally for rescues but if it prevented a pet from entering the shelter system many will help you relocate your furry friend.

And to the owner: My apologies for your loss. I suggest you contact Animal Legal Defense fund for advice.

necropsy confirms suffocation delta airline will pay me .50 per pound on my dog!

  • ridgeside

I sympathize with you, you shouldn't beat yourself up, the airline should have the same conditions for animals as it does for passengers, hopefully this tragedy will stop incidents like this in the future.

  • lmc

OK for one I am the owner of this bulldog! for two I don't know how this information came here or who has this info.We are awaiting necropsy reports to find out what has happened as far as the airline, They have already told media the dog had a pre existing problem.....imagine that.....well do tell when results are inn! to the commenter's about flying, well.. states on there own website (Delta cargo)animals are flown in temp controlled and pressure controlled areas and this is the first and last time I have or will ship! this same airline froze another poor victim just last month but if i only knew........Believe you me........I have put enough guilt on myself doing this to our poor son/companion shipping that is, I wish i wasn't mis uninformed by the airline..........I will live with this the rest of my life the day i had to identify my beloved baby.

  • nycgurl

Would you really put your best friend/child/family member in a cage to be carried in the cargo hold of a plane? Just so you won't be lonely on vacation or are too cheap to spring for a dog sitter or drive. Real pet lovers!

  • lmc

the dog was being shipped to his new home!...and i was assured it was extremely safe!.......I have enough guilt as I opened the crate door and saw blood coming out of his mouth from his frost bitten tongue!

  • cucarachita

fact is, you shouldn't put a dog in the hold no matter what. If you must, you better investigate and make sure that airline has temperature control in the hold. From what I understand, some do and some don't.

I've transported a small dog in the hold about five times on transatlantic flights, and once, when delays were predicted, I had to fight for the right to bring the dog (in his carrying case) on board, because it was about 95 degrees, and I knew the dog would overheat waiting for take-off. I was ready to get on another flight if necessary.

It's a risk every time, you may as well understand that before booking your dog into the hold. Anything can happen. Some breeds are known to have breathing problems or be susceptible to heart attacks. Only a very healthy and naturally hardy dog should be transported in the hold.

  • ridgeside

I'm sure letter writing is very low on the priority list, and as I told you yesterday, I have already commented where my farm is located , if you want to know so bad you will have to find it,out of you, your cronies, and my family's safety, I will never give you an exact address, you are nothing more than a bunch of terrorists, which is why you are hounding me for my address. My property is open for anyone except for people with harmful intentions.

  • ridgeside

Here is where all you peta activist could actually do some good. There is a obvious problem and a obvious solution. Problem- dogs freezing to death at 30,000 feet. Solution start a letter writing campaign and lobby the airlines to create a climate controlled hold, to house traveling pets. Problem solved, but I'm sure their just going to pick up their grim reaper and KKK costumes from the dry cleaners and disrupt airports.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

have to visited Peta site, they have many action alerts (including letter campaigns). Also you won't disclose your dairy farm because you don't want people to see the truth.

  • robingee

    JetPaws!

  • Heather D

PLEASE people, stop flying on & supporting irresponsible airlines that put animals in the cargo area. There are airlines which will transport your best friend in much more humane ways.

  • Amanda Harletsch

People in general like to push boundaries, yet assholes like to see how far they can get away with doing the wrong stuff.

I bet there is more than "accidental" negligence here.

When are we going to punish assholes with fines, that is the AIRLINE should pay for not being able to supervise their services to live creatures properly.

Hope the owners get retribution in civil court!

  • Pachinko

Heartbreaking. Sue the airline $440 million like Michael Mineo is suing to the city.

please check this site before traveling with your pet and here is an airline which I haven't use but will when I do travel in the future.

    http://www.companionair.com/

  • echo

They made another post saying: why are we idiots!? The airline said it would be safe. They lied!

Ummm... well, you believed them. That's why you are idiots. They want to charge you a fee! Why would you put your pet through the stress of flying anyway? Whether the pet survives or not, don't do it!! Too many pets die this way every year. Why take that chance. They are fools! Leave the ASPCA alone. Sounds to me like they just want to point fingers. I know that happens when people get upset, but it's time to realize and apologize.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

agreed, ASPCA doesn't have anything to do with this. They need to sue the airlines, unfortunately animals have no rights and are deemed property so the most that they will received is the "price" of the dog. Shame, but I hope that they would turn this experience into a positive one and seek legislation changes. Hold airlines accountable and prohibits companion pets in cargo.

  • resa

    :(

  • NannyState

Goddamn airlines. We need high speed rail NOW.

  • Amanda Harletsch

    So true!

But like many things in this country staying in the past is the best "solution" to progress!

  • snickerdoodle

Can Gothamist please stop posting so many sad animal stories? It's depressing. I'd much rather read about humans suffocating and dying. Thank you.

  • lelee

And thank you @felixthecat for posting the incidents list. Again, so sad. But, what are the full stats? How many dogs were transported per airline? Context is always helpful for understanding.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

    Here it is: (FAA)

Since May 2005, the U.S. Department of Transportation (“DOT”) has required all U.S. airlines that operate scheduled passenger flights to file monthly reports on pets that died or were lost or injured during transport, pursuant to the requirements of section 710 of the 2000 Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century (as subsequently codified at Title 49, Section 41721 of the United States Code and Title 14, Section 234.13 of the Code of Federal Regulations).

    http://www.thirdamendment.com/animals.html

"If [man] is not to stifle his human feelings, he must practise kindness towards animals, for he who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."

    --Immanuel Kant

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Note: These statistics include only those animals who have guardians. Animals exploited by the pet trade and/or who have been purchased and are being flown to an individual or a pet store or are destined to be used in entertainment, in research, or for other commercial purposes have not been accounted for. It is also important to remember that for every reported incident, there are many that go unreported.

I'll check the FDA site and post when I find the complete stats. Also here is a list of airlines that adopted a compassionate policy and don't allow animals in the cargo section.

'for the safety of your animal DO NOT USE DELTA AIRLINES'

so can i still use delta for myself if i dont bring my dog? i take delta 126 and 127 MONTHLY on my roundtrip to/from spain in business and fly every 2-3 months to from heathrow because they have non-stops from jfk. i've racked up a hell of a lot of frequent fliers from it, too.

so i should stop all that because of their pet policy?

    please advise us, felix!

  • Teddie Boy Eddie

Oh, you fly in business class monthly. You must be important! A young professional of some sort.

  • youngpro

sorry- didn't mean in business, i meant FOR business. and thanks for getting the point of the comment which was to show how much more convenient it is for people like me to get to europe on delta, regardless of their pet policy.

  • whitecastlerock

Why aren't you shaming the owners for having this World Bred type of dog? They probably got the dog from a breeder right????

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

This dog froze to death, it is important for people to be informed about transportation as well as puppy mills. What is your issue now?

  • whitecastlerock

No issues-just wondering whether you were going to fly off the handle this time.

  • youngpro

nah, he took his blood pressure pill and his xanax today.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

    whatever floats your boat.

  • lelee

This is quite disturbing: Why post these pics so blatantly on the front page of the site? At least warn users that the jump has a graphic image. So sad for the dog and its owner.

But why is the owner so outraged that the ASPCA did not get involved? This is dragging the ASPCA name into something that really doesn't involve them, turning a negative light on a good group for no reason at all.

The ASPCA is right; it's a matter between Delta and the passenger and, hopefully, a GOVERNMENT agency.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'
  • bassoonalex

Actually, CompanionAir isn't available until they get more money. It was supposed to start up in 2007, but they never got enough start-up capital. Right now, they aren't even announcing dates for potential first flights.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

    ugh, thanks

  • youngpro

i would stay clear of believing this story until you hear it from a more reputable source, especially the Delta press release.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

The following is a list of the animal-related incidents that were reported for each airline between May 2005 and May 2006.

Alaska Airlines: 2 deaths, 3 injuries, 1 loss

    American Airlines: 6 deaths

    Comair: 1 injury

Continental Airlines: 8 deaths, 8 injuries

    Delta: 2 deaths, 2 losses

    Frontier: 1 injury

    Hawaiian: 3 injuries

    Horizon: 2 deaths, 1 injury

    Midwest: 1 death

    Northwest: 2 injuries, 2 losses

    Pinnacle: 2 injuries

Shuttle America (United Express): 1 death

    SkyWest: 1 death

    United Airlines: 4 deaths

US Airways: 1 death, 1 injury, 1 loss

    Total: 28 deaths, 22 injuries, 6 losses = 56 incidents

Continental Airlines accounted for more than one-quarter of the deaths (eight out of 24) and a little more than one-third of the injuries (eight out of 22).

American Airlines had six deaths, the next-greatest number of deaths after Continental.

About 70 percent of the incidents involved dogs, who are commonly forced to travel in cargo rather in the cabin

    http://www.helpinganimals.com/Travel_cargo.asp

  • usernamee

it's not really fair to look at that data and make any real conclusions.

yes, Continental had the most deaths, but perhaps Continental also happened to have the most animals traveling on it's planes, for whatever reason.

Horizon had 2 deaths, for example, and it seems reasonable that 4 times as many animals travel on Continental than on Horizon, which would statistically make Horizon more dangerous for your pet to fly on than Continental.

  • wobbleSmith

8 out of 24 is one third (1/3).

    love,

  • whitecastlerock

Well if the story came across craigslistwire, then it must be 100% fact based...

  • Alex

I thought most airlines stopped letting you put dogs with small snouts in the cargo hold since when the hold gets really hot the small snout prevents them from breathing well.

  • Nix

The hot cargo hold might explain why he froze to death.

  • savian

this stinks. i'm sure the guys who loaded him into the plane's luggage area were bundled up--depending on where the plane came from...but am i the only one who would NEVER put my animal in the luggage compartment of an aircraft? sad story.
