NJ Transit Fare Hike Likely

2010_2_njtransit.jpg

The MTA isn't the only transit agency pondering fare hikes. According to WCBS, NJ Transit officials claim they might need to increase fares if Gov. Chris Christie moves forward with his plan to cut $32 million in funding. Facing a $2.2 billion budget deficit, Christie says he has to reduce funding and suggested NJ Transit negotiate with unions before upping fares. NJ Transit executive director James Weinstein told ABC: "I pledge to our fareholders that we will look at everything possible on the cost side of the equation before we talk about imposing burdens on the riders of our system." The fare hike would be agency's the second in three years.

This is of course going to make the exodus worse, the upper class is already going, the middle class is going to jump if getting to already expensive NYC becomes more expensive. And don't laugh fellow New Yorkers, we have a worse exodus problem, and you better believe that Transit increases (fare increases, or worse, student metrocards get slashed), additional tolls/congestion pricing or increased taxes (which is inevitable really) will only worsen the situation, and may even make our 8% loss jump.

Chris Christie is so fat, when he sits down in the first car, the rear car arrives at the station first.

well with the epic budget deficit new jersey is in thanks to its LAST governor (a democrat, in case you were wondering) where else is the money going to come from? they already have the highest property taxes in the nation...people just can't afford to live there anymore.

i'm not saying i'm pissed that this is what it takes, but when you inherit a shitty budget deficit, what else can you do? YOU be governor and figure it out.

Just digesting. Let's cut public transportation while we (politicians) still get a nice big fat raise.

American political like usual. They only care about themselves and nobody else.
