Pigeon Feeder's Seed Stolen In "Violent" Confrontation

An Upper East Side woman named Anna Dove loves birds. How much? She had her last name changed to Dove, from Kugelmas (she's also behind National Pigeon Day). That much. But while the 63-year-old Dove may love birds, her fellow humans don't love her. In fact, a neighbor recently caught her feeding pigeons near his apartment on East 93rd Street and became so enraged that he grabbed her bag of seeds and tossed it; the confrontation was allegedly violent enough for a passerby to call 911.

Retired teacher Arthur Schwartz, who says the seeds attract rats, took off before authorities got there. Dove has now filed charges against Schwartz, and told the NY Post, “The guy was violent. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a weapon the next time." But Dove has been reported for her own violent behavior in the past! She tossed seeds in the face of a Parks Department volunteer in 2003, and through the club she founded she apparently supports an organization that was named a terrorist threat by Homeland Security in 2005—the Animal Liberation Front.

Dove says “people feeding birds are being victimized... It’s got to stop." Currently there are only rules against pigeon feeding in public parks, though the paper points out under sanitation code, spreading seeds along sidewalks could be seen as littering.

Wow, I actually KNOW Ana Dove. And lemmetellyou: She is one of those crazy ol' bird ladies! I'm sure the pigeon-feeding wasn't the ONLY thing that led to this confrontation.

I enjoy feeding the birds as a pastime but it's a rare treat and I don't give any more than the birds eat. These people who just dump birdseed and walk away annoy the hell out of me. The birds don't actually eat most of it, it just festers and gets disgusting over the course of several days attracting all kinds of diseased animals while getting moldy and growing fungus. I really, truly hate these people and if I ever caught one in the act I would probably want to steal their birdseed too

Hello, your city is full of mice, rats, and insects, and it's not because a little old lady is feeding pigeons in the park. And guess what? They are still going to be there even if Anna Dove stops feeding pigeons.

What is wrong with people? You shouldn't feed birds in NYC. You're essentially throwing food on the ground for whatever vermin to find, including rats, mice, insects etc. Pigeons are vermin too. People who throw food on the ground should be fined for littering.

Is that her in the photo? If so, damn, she's scary-looking. She needs to be more concerned about feeding herself than the pigeons.

No, that is not Anna Dove. But some people would videotape anything since their lives are so empty

I'm just going to follow her around with a shop-vac.

  • Gwinny

Gonna have to side with the crazy dude on this one instead of the crazy lady. Of course birdseed attracts rats! In any case, pigeons are disgusting.

I just let my dog run into the flocks of birds while the seed-throwers are tossing their seeds/garbage/ratfood/cockroachfood. I'm really not sure how it doesn't qualify as littering. Oh wait, everybody litters here. Nevermind.

Retired teacher Arthur Schwartz is probably from the Rubber Room

I also had it out with one of those Union Square Alliance workers who told me that I couldn't feed the Squirrel. I told him to fuck off and made a complaint with the Union Square Partnership. Told them that this is a PUBLIC PARK and that they are not to tell people not to feed squirrels.

Felix, if you truly love animals then you should not be feeding them. First off, pigeons (which I realize you didn't mention in this comment) are an introduced species from Europe which out-compete native bird species for resources, most notably habitat, thereby reducing species diversity in our area. Gray squirrels are a native species, but they need to forage for food. By feeding them you are weakening their natural ability to compete for resources in the wild. Just so you don't accuse me of talking out my ass, I am a professional biologist.

Bloomberg doesn't permit acorn trees planted and there is less for them now to forage. The same argument has been used towards homelessness. Don't feed them because you're not helping them but crippling them. What is wrong with handing out a peanut "once in a while" . Regarding pigeons, I do sometimes throw them any side bread that I don't want to eat. But what is upsetting is that this crazy rubber room teacher wouldn't attack any person throwing they nasty MCDonald trash on the streets or their cigarettes butts but attacks some woman who feeds birds. His is a miserable person

  • Boogie Down

Humans (including the homeless) are domesticated animals, pigeons and squirrels are not (though it may appear otherwise). Most homeless people suffer from mental illness. What they need is permanent shelter, mental health care, proper nutrition, and a number of other things. Giving a bit of food here and there isn't the answer. But in this current frenzy of anti-socialism, I don't see the homeless situation improving, sadly. Anyway, I digress. The best thing you can do for animals is let them fend for themselves. Yes, some will perish, but this is the way of natural selection. That's how species ensure their survival. If you give everything to them, they work for nothing, only exist in cities, and you have what equates to the extinction (actually extirpation) of that species in the wild. It's like having the only living members of a species living in a zoo. In other words, sad.

I do agree with you that this guy was wrong to physically attack Dove. That is never called for. I also agree that McDonald's trash being thrown on the ground is disgusting.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

I understand and thanks for your feedback. Yes, in General, I think Humans should just others specie be. Just leave the alone. I do agree on that.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

I meant we should all just let them be. Stop using them in zoos, circuses, etc. And yes they are wild but they do live in an urban environment. I wouldn't share peanuts with them only if Bloomberg wouldn't be so mean. He doesn't permit acorn trees in parks and had many removed in Central Park. But you are right because they can't depend on us to feed them since they won't be able to survive on their own. I do agree with that. Thanks for your feedback.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Fucking miserable shit heads have nothing in their lives but concern themselves with someone feeding a pigeon. fucking losers.

  • Mr Mel

    Yeah, they're the losers.
