Subway Hero Meets His D-Train Damsel In Distress

subwayhero0210.jpg Who doesn't love a good subway hero story? The two real-life leading roles this time around are played by 18-year-old Rosie Rittenbery and 23-year-old Lance McGraw. Though the two had never seen each other before, even though they're practically neighbors, he saved her life last Thursday morning.

MyFoxNY reports that they were both standing on a subway platform when a Manhattan-bound D train was approaching and Rittenbery passed out onto the tracks. She recalls, "I looked at my friend and she said, 'Rosie you look really white,' and that's the last thing I remember. I had no memory of that, then I just somersaulted over and landed on my back on the tracks." Apparently her friend, nor anyone else on the platform, made a move to save her—and McGraw says, "I just thought, I have to do this before the train comes. I didn't realize how close the train was and it didn't occur to me that I had put myself in so much danger."

Fellow straphangers gasped when McGraw jumped down to pick up her limp body. He got her, and himself out of harm's way just in time, and the EMTs arrived to take it from there. One medic says, "He was fantastic, he saved her life." We sort of hope this dangerous meet-cute sparks a romance!

UPDATE: The subway hero's roommate has informed us that Fox got it wrong, it was the 8th Ave N train station that was the stage for this heroic scene. Also, he crushed our hearts by letting us know there is no romance, Ms. Rittenbery already has a boyfriend.

I have unsubscribed twice and still get email notifications. Make it stop Gothamist. It's a dumb feature anyway.

    Love you

  • JLRodP

Why is this about race???? Good for the black man! Always keep your chin up, buddy.

Anyway, certain white people are too stuck up, like nothing surrounds them. Asian people have a bad habit of adopting such a behavior... yuck.

  • elpollodiablo

When I say SUBWAY you say HERO; SUBWAY!

  • dgeee

    FOOT LONG!

  • S.K.

So whati f the damsel has a boyfriend? it's not she's married to him. I say, go for her.

As for the white straphangers- most of them could not have saved this damsel, because they're busy checking their Blackberries, texting, and listening to loud iPods. Oblivious to the people they're standing or sitting next to.

  • TheKlaus

OK I figured it out. But why I all of a sudden started receiving reply notifications is beyond me.

    Love you

  • TheKlaus

WHY ARE THESE REPLIES ALL OF A SUDDEN SHOWING UP IN MY INBOX! MAKE IT STOP GOTHAMIST!!!!!!!!

  • Guest

    this makes me smile. :)

  • wobbleSmith

i saw this on the news last night. he seems like a really stand up guy. good on you, pal.

she seemed like a heroin waif...

  • potsmoker

modern etiquette still applies, a hand written thank you note and BJ is required in this situation...

not one of those lick the shaft, put the head in the mouth for a for seconds & let me finish with my hands BJ's,

but full on nut suckin, butt licking, finished off with her finger in his azz and full load swallow, a little drip on the lip is OK, but you owe the guy a complete bjob....

  • Stephenson Billings

I'm sorry but I really don't understand what you just said. My comment was in reference to the fact that most people stood by and did nothing as this woman overdosed and fell on the tracks. Your reply is not just obscene, it's irrelevant.

  • wobbleSmith

i don't think it was a direct reply to you, Master Billings. but if it's any consolation, the comments belonging to you and potsmoker set the reds and the violets of the vaccous prism known as "gothamist commenting"

(the reds are despair for the human race; the violets are dick jokes)

  • niloo

I'd rather be a violet than a red, but dick jokes are overrated.

  • Stephenson Billings

It's rather sad that most New Yorkers have neither the interest nor the time to save other people's lives. I don't find this story inspiring at all, just pathetic.

  • FJF

    Rosie still looks really white.

  • Rocknrope

Yes, will Rosie spread her damsely legs for our hero?

  • buffmancandy

if you are not standing right next to the edge you won't fall on the tracks when you pass out. It doesn't make the train come any faster and people won't have to put themselves in danger to save you.

  • JacqueMehoff

Well Done Mr. McGraw. Well done.

    Yes, you're a hero.

aren't there any WHITE subway heroes???

now watch someone reply with some conspiracy liberal media crack. notice, this was Fox NY.

  • longacre

No white subway heroes? Lest you forget one Bernard Hugo Goetz.

  • JacqueMehoff

    his middle name is "hugo"?

    nope, not a hero.

    and, we've forgotten about him.

  • Rocknrope

C'mon, you know that white people are conditioned to look down and avoid all eye contact when travelling on the subway.

  • JacqueMehoff

actually I think there were one or two, maybe?

but those were like 2 person jobs, you know where one person does it then the group mentality follows to help.

not like this guy or Wes A.

  • Wza

Give that man some hero sex!

    jk.

    Good job young man!

  • niloo

Congratulations to Lance. Nice to see an encouraging story about people for a change. At least there are still decent people in the world. After reading all the mean-spirited and douchey comments from regulars on this site (Dead Himmler, Pot/Bongsmoker, YoungPro etc, stupid cowboy fan or whatever), it would be easy to get the impression that the human race is doomed. You know if any of those dirtballs had been standing there when she fell, they would have just stood there, continuing on with their mouthbreathing and being glad they themselves weren't on the tracks.

  • Guest

You're wrong, jackass. I would have helped her off the tracks in an instant. It's a shame you assume otherwise. I have extreme compassion for the human race and contrary to what felixtheasshat thinks, that extends to animals as well. I only bash those who deserve bashing. I can't help it if your sarcasm and dark humor meter are faulty.

  • niloo

    @stupidcowboyfan

Oh, right. Empathy and compassion just drip from your posts.

As for potsmoker/bonghead, well, I think his post on this thread just speaks volumes for itself...

  • Guest

You, like Felix, need to study more about reading comprehension. If you base your judgement on an individual by the posts they make on a "news" (I use that term loosely) blog, then you're missing a lot. Plus, most of my posts are very compassionate. If I didn't care about the human race (or animals), I would not respond at all. Instead, I try to get people to THINK for once in their miserable lives.

Thanks for the name calling. It shows just how mature and thought out your posts are. (If you don't see the sarcasm in that, then I'm completely right about your reading comprehension skills.)

  • niloo

What a tale of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

  • Guest

Nice Shakespeare quote. It's a real shame you have no grasp on what it means.

  • niloo

Ah, there speaks the sheer folly of callow youth. You sound very young. Honestly, I hope you really are capable of compassion toward both people and animals. God knows the world needs it.

  • Guest

Actually, I was thinking that you sound very young; about as young as felix. Although, if you consider being in your 30's young, then I appreciate it.

  • wobbleSmith

see, when i've got into personal sniping with other users, gothamist has censored me. yet i have to read others pissing on each other.

    (well, i guess i don't HAVE to...)

what's with the double standard, Dob-Carlson? can't keep up with your own house rules?

  • potsmoker

is rosie going to give up drugs?

i resent being called into account for insensitive remarks before i even made one...so there, happy now.

i granted your wish. follow me on facebook and get more vile keyboard rants.

We sort of hope this dangerous meet-cute sparks a romance!

Depends on why she passed out. Flu? Terminal disease? Eating disorder? The leopard jacket is a dealbreaker in its own right.
  • jibbly

You say Subway, I say Hero!

  • Outter Burrougher

    Subway!

  • wingedearth

Commendable work, Lance. Courageous and decisive.

  • wonderchimp5

from the original article on fox. Rosie says," I didn't actually see it myself, I think if I had actually seen my body lying there on the tracks it would be a much scarier feeling for me."

    like patrick swayze in Ghost?

  • eat vegans

yes, an out of body experience would have added to the situation. WTF

  • Clarice City

Lance, you are a class act.

  • gunkjunkie

This was on the N line at the 8th Ave station. Not the D.

  • mullagatawny

I'm assuming you all mean the 8th St. station.

  • TheKlaus

"Apparently her friend, nor anyone else, made a move to save her"

    weirdo sentence

  • LB

Would you jump practically in front of an oncoming train to save someone ? I sure as hell wouldn't ! Just thinking about self-preservation .
