Locker Room Thieves Terrorize NY Health Clubs

Better watch your gym socks! Across the city at least 41 thieves have been cleaning out health club lockers, where security cameras dare not film. Over the holidays there was a marked increase in gym locker break-ins, after which the NYPD released a poster bearing the faces of the suspected thieves. At least one of them has a gym membership (others buy day passes with stolen credit cards), and they’re expert lock-pickers, reports the NY Post. One woman who was caught demonstrated her ability to break open ten lockers in three minutes. Hardest hit have been NYC’s Equinox and NYSC franchises. In addition to cash and cards, "they go for high-end items like Rolexes, and they work all over town," a police source said.

Locker theft is an ongoing problem at my local Eastern Athletic gym. But a good percentage of the crimes are committed on lockers without a lock...no bolt cutters required. Get fit, get smart, get a lock...no brainer.

The locker room attendants at NYSC @ 36th and Madison are a sketchy lot... Never leave valuables in your locker.

I was visiting the office of another company for work and I wasn't going back to my office that day, so, I ended up going to NYSC with my work stuff straight after.

hmmm yah, I had about $450K in certified checks (written to my company) left in my locker. I locked my locker. But, WTF. These people are assholes. Right next to the guys who steal bikes. If you want to steal, steal from the I-bankers. So yah, I guess I don't have a problem if you steal from equinox folks. But not NYSC, those people are working class.

just goes to show how much the desire for washboard abs and a rock hard butt damages your finances and lifestyle. we need a war on locker room thieves: just as the feds do to stem the flow of illegal drugs by attaching the drug cartels, we need to fight this war at the source: close down the gyms! Just Say No to Equinox and NYSC!

Bally's is ok because everyone knows there is no money there, and the only rollis in the locker rooms are for sale $10 each.

Why just yesterday some guy hustled in behind me at the Soho Equinox and blurted to the dim-witted desk person something about "checked in before" as he shot past the check-in without producing a card. And at least half of the lockers in the men's locker rooms are left unlocked, making for easy pickings.
