Okay, since Gothamist apparently has no desire to uncheck this email notification by default, I've created a filter in my email account to automatically delete anything from info@gothamistllc.com if I ever forget to uncheck it. Whose bright idea was this? I have never seen a notification system that defaults to "on." It's a stupid idea anyway. Who wants to read comments in unthreaded email form rather than reading them in context (in the cases where they're replying to other comments)? Uninstall this script. It's not in anyone's best interest. Not even Gothamist's. Would you rather have people read their emails or would you rather have more page and ad views from them coming back? This may not be as bad as the Google Buzz debacle, but it's hardly smart.

  • Great news, Spirit: we actually discussed this on Friday, and decided we'd either default to unchecked, or set it on a cookie, so you can decide how it works. But that was Friday afternoon at like 5pm, so it won't get done until Monday. But FYI, many blogs do set it to checked- I believe Engadget and the AOL blogs do, for instance.

Hopefully, the cookies will work better than your current ones. Checking "remember me" when logging in works for about a couple of hours, exactly the same as not checking it. And every once in a while, it forgets I selected "full" view and goes back to "summary."

    Word.

I have to admit my first thought when it appeared was "But won't that lower their page-views?"

I don't celebrate valentines day because I am gay. It's a holiday created to put down the feelings of our people.

I'm a big dyke and I adore my cutiepie girlfriend--got her chocolate for the day.

    No.

it's a holiday created to sell stuff (chocolates, flowers etc)

In the Jewish schools they also don't promote Valentines Day. You've got to hand it to Hallmark, though, they took the "Saint" out of "Saint Valentines Day" but the Yeshivas and other Jewish Day Schools didn't fall for it.
