Chinese Deliveryman Killed in Drunk Hit-and-Run

A Queens Chinese deliveryman is dead after being struck on his scooter yesterday by the drunk driver of an SUV. After hitting Jiangiu Chen, the motorist Richard Conreras allegedly sped off, and dragged the man briefly. Cops found the 28-year-old driver—who was previously arrested for DWI in September—on Greenpoint and Bradley avenues near his home. "I know I hit someone. I was in a vehicle accident, and I’m on my way home," he said at his arraignment today.

Chen—who his bosses describe as hard-working and friendly—died at Bellevue Hospital. "I was supposed to be putting up things to celebrate [Chinese] New Year’s. But now I won't. Now we are too sad to celebrate," Lydia Kwok, who owns Ten Full Kitchen in Sunnyside, where Chen worked, told the Post. The deliveryman was 52 to and came to the country with his wife several years ago. Contreras is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated.

Chen was hard-working and friendly, trying to get ahead in life. Does Conreras contribute anything to society at all? I notice his job wasn't mentioned.

I know this is no revelation to most here. But it truly is amazing - there are many willing to take a shit on the Constitution and take away our rights due to the, what, .000001% chance the average American has of dying in a terrorist attack.

I would guess it's literally about 10 million times more likely to die in a car or getting hit by one. Yet, we do so little and consider driving to be so much of a societal good that we'll tolerate such a high casualty rate.

I was down South over thanksgiving and saw a lot of these tiny scooters. I asked, what's the deal? my brother said most of those overweight guys probably had their license taken away and can't drive. I'm guessing enforcement is much stricter down there.

Prosecutors said he has a prior DWI bust from September. Bail was set at $7,500 for the current arrest.
