Keep It Covered: Condom Design Contest Finalists

The judges have wrapped up their search for a new NYC condom wrapper design, and now it's time to vote for your favorite rubber package out of five finalists! The Health Department received nearly 600 entries since December, when it invited New Yorkers to design a wrapper that would “capture the city’s distinctive culture while promoting safer sex.” But it wasn't just locals who got in on the action; designs flooded in from as far away as Perm, Russia. (There's a Yakov Smirnoff joke in here somewhere, but damned if we can find it.)

The NYC Condom is a lubricated Lifestyles male condom (the same one sold in stores) but it has its own distinctive wrapper, and is free. The winning design from this contest won’t replace Behar’s, but it will appear on several million NYC Condom packages beginning next fall. Obviously, it's an outrage that Gothamist's sad rat wrapper design was rejected, but we're going to be good sports about this and vote for the Mac power button... or maybe the Manhole, which could use some extra protection today?

I like a couple of the finalists, but I'm bias towards our entry which didn't make the cut. I think we got "screwed". Take our survey & vote on your favorite Kokopelli design:

Haven't enough manholes blown up around the city already?

    My vote: Top Hat!

  • camera_club

loving the top hat one. cheers to Mr. Russell Greenberg

  • Barbj8

After lots and lots of consideration, maybe two minutes, I vote for the train & tunnel, kind of like instructions for the first timer!

  • Thinky Think

Is it me or does it seem that certain wrappers apply to certain life styles? Ex. The train going into the tunnel(boys and girls), manhole(well who has a manhole other than a man, or maybe they are trying to say the hole is owned by the man but dirty?) I'm confused :-( lol

  • nycraf

Why couldn't they just use the logo that's to the lower right of the top hat, blown it up, and gone with that?

  • hoodlum

I like the train and power button. The one with dots sceeves me out.

  • Global Wombat

And I thought I was the only one who hated dots.

  • Global Wombat

I'd like the train more if it weren't for lazy sketchiness of it, so the manhole/tophat wins in my eye.

Now if they only made the product larger...

  • ProfessorVonNostren

Dammit, I want to vote for Sad Rat.

  • nycraf

I vote for the train tunnel as well.

I think the "power" one is pictured upside down.

  • DarkGemini

1 vote for the train in the tunnel.

  • Wza

    I pick the train.

    Power one is dumb.

  • babyfishmouth

I love the cheekiness (pun intended) of the manhole cover. Keep your manhole covered for safer sex! But it also reminds me of the sewer, so now I'm turned off. I think the power button is cool and would appeal to younger people. The top hat reminds me of the Monopoly guy.

  • Snoopy

The manhole design would make a great face for a wristwatch.

I've been told by a group of younger users that the quality of the item isn't really that good. So hopefully they will increase the quality and forget about new packaging.

  • Rocknrope

Let me guess, they said they were too small?

  • beardofbees

Re: Manhole: "while also reminding New Yorkers of the critical role sewers have played in promoting public health in the city."

And who really doesn't want reminded of sewers right before they have sex?

  • Rocknrope

Reminds me of that quote from Mike Tyson about him contracting the clap:

"Either she was a prostitute, or a very filthy young lady."

  • ides_of_march

Re: manhole design: might as well have put a picture of some guy's hairy butt for all the subtlety.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

    Power button works for me.
