Two Alarm Fire At Village Paper

Amid the snow storm barreling into the NYC region today, firefighters battled a two alarm fire at Village Paper (which one Yelp user described as, "Like [Halloween], Village Paper is colorful, overstimulating, a little creepy, and wonderfully foolish") in Greenwich Village that began after 7 a.m. Readers sent us these photographs of the scene—one said, "There was a huge bang at around 7:10am this morning that sounded like a tire exploding" and that the FDNY was on the scene within minutes. Currently, the fire is under control.

I woke up because I smelled smoke. I ran to my window, heard breaking glass, and then suddenly flames billowed out from across the street. The nearby firemen hadn't arrived yet but did shortly thereafter. What a shame. This place was a good local business. Hopefully, no one (e.g., the fireman referenced above) was seriously injured.

Actually, there was a Mayday and a firefighter was injured--not sure how badly.

yup, sweet people & perfectly described by that yelp user. i was standing in front with my dog when it happened; quietly snowing, a dog poopin & KABOOM-BOOM! kind of a two-parter. glad no one got hurt.

I just lost my favorite card store and lotto place.the trucks are still out there now at 8:42 am they have a latter truck putting water thru the roof . the fire was fast. i was sitting at my window and I looked out and could barely see across the street within seconds was that explosion .they have the tanks for blowing balloons up so i am guessing that was what we heard.I feel bad for the owner he is such a nice guy .I don't know if the kids toy store or the resturant connected to him were damaged at all. this building use to be the old sutters bakery .i hope he will be able to reopen the business.
