School Already Canceled Tomorrow for Snowpocalypse!

Brooklyn youths use a 1957 snowstorm as an excuse for idleness and pelting busy adults with snowballs. (Lisa Larsen/Life )

Snow noes, the teenagers are going to be running amok tonight! The Mayor's office has preemptively announced that all NYC public schools are going to be closed tomorrow out of panic that this time the impending snowmageddon will actually happen, as our venerable seers portend. Over a foot of snow is expected starting early tomorrow morning, but throughout tonight, expect adolescents to run (more) wild in the streets (than usual). Then they'll sleep half the day away tomorrow, rising for The Price is Right, followed by a mass high-jacking of snow plows to make sure roads remain impassable through the weekend. Rules were made to be frozen!

  • Greenpoint60

Back in 1957 I was out in the snow, today the kids will be home watching TV while eating processed junk food.

Yeh 1978 - 1996 my entire school life fit neatly inside. Never had a school day, hate all children who weekday winter frolic as a result. More on my blog.

Well don't go jumping to conclusions, It ain't started snowing yet ! But I do Remember the Blizzard of 96, Even though, I graduated a year prior . I got three days off work with pay because of that storm .

  • theplanetofchuck

This just in "the National Weather Service has downgraded tomorrow's weather from a winter wonderland to a Class 3 Kill Storm"

  • NannyState

Teenagers praying for ten inches of the white stuff? Sounds like more tales from the rubber room.

  • Malcolm Tucker

Call me mad, but I actually have high hopes for SNOWPOCALYPSE 2: SNOWVERKILL, after the disappointment of the original Snowpocalypse. Only white stuff I saw out my window Saturday was pre-salt covering the sidewalks and some poor Albino bugger across the way.

  • Dead Himmler

Does this mean a snow day for the rubber room?

  • sadpanda

"Snowpocalypse" and "snowmageddon" are both already taken. The former for the storm in December and the latter for the most recent storm in DC. Find a new name.

  • Spirit of 76

    Snownarok?

  • Steven

NYC public schools sure have become soft.

  • HBHB

Bloomberg must know something we dont! They NEVER close NYC public schools, even when it IS snowing.

  • PKinNYC

    Kanye West hates white people.

  • I'm so annoyed with how "Chicken Little" the news/politician nexus has become, that I hope it doesn't snow.

And then the children will be running wild in the streets...

  • Gothamist_Cynic

We're not even going to get an inch.

  • evbo

That's what I said about the last alleged "snowstorm" last Saturday. But I have a feeling we're gonna be well & truly dumped on this time around.

  • jaycjay

If you read the actual forecasts for the weekend (as opposed to always-hyped coverage of the forecasts), they made clear that there was a lot of unpredictability as to how the storm would track as it moved up the coast, and so how it would impact this area.

This time around, there's none of that.

  • Blue387

    Are any colleges closed?

  • Spirit of 76

"Snowpocalypse"? That is so lame. Come on, JDS. "Snowmageddon" sounds so much better.

  • famdoc

"Snow Day" was actually one of the better films of its ilk.

Starred Park Slope child actress Zena Grey.

  • JenChungsBaby

    "Blow Day" starred Sasha Grey.

  • Ishtar

Good. I live near Clara Abortion and Prospect Heights. I hate all of those kids. I'd rather crawl through snow everyday than deal with them blocking the sidewalks and being hormonal annoying teens.

  • Think2wice

Does Tawana Palsy go to Clara Abortion?

  • FJF

Back when I was in grade school (90s), I remember only two snow days. And that was for two feet! These kids have it too easy.

  • barryap

We're definitely around the same age. I remember getting off for the Blizzard of '96, and then later on, a day off in HS for snow that never actually came.

  • jibbly

I was in high school for the 96 blizzard closing. If I remember correctly it was the first snow day NYC public schools had since the '70s. Even then, we had to sit in front of the TV and hope that the morning shows would announce the official closings.

Suddenly kids get preemptive snow days? WTF?

  • Tien

Blizzard of '96 was the first time the city shut public schools since the Blizzard of February 1978 .

  • peanuthead

whoah!! I remember the blizzard of '78! was in third grade at the time and had some damn good snowball fights. *sigh*

  • jibbly

    Thanks for the fact check!

I spent the day in Queens jumping off 2nd floor balconies into snow drifts that were 10 feet high with my friends. Then we hit Kissena Park for some awesome "sled on garbage can lids" action. Fun times.

  • DorothyMick

I loved sledding in Kissena Golf course in '96. Second grade- good times.

  • Gnomie

I loved the blizzard of '96! I was in elementary school and spent the day sledding down the stairs of my building complex with all the other local kids; good times!

  • silver

Crime rate must be down, or they are all locked up in Rikers. The reason NYC never declares snow days is that robbery, drug dealing, mugging and graffiti and gang murder rates will skyrocket that day. And working class parents will be pissed that they have to take a sick day to babysit their elementary kids at home.

  • dudeandahalf

OR, you're a dumbass and it's just that snow isn't a big fuckin deal.

  • Kreo

you guys are insane. snow is bad.

  • Kojak

    Kreo...Why do you hate America?

    Why do you hate FREEDOM?

  • Wza

    lol

  • Torgo

After last weekend's no-show, this one better be the real thing.

  • valeriob

Drew Carey is awesome, so it's a win-win for everyone!
