Paterson Bombshell Rumor Watch: Resignation Imminent?

2010_01_govpat.jpg The speculation about a supposed "bombshell" NY Times story about Governor David Paterson has been percolating since last week. Now, the Business Insider offers, "We've now heard from a single source familiar with the goings on at the Governor's office that the story will likely drop on Monday, and that the governor's resignation will follow."

Previously, the Daily News had reported that he was spotted "nuzzling" with a married woman (not his wife) at a NJ restaurant and the Post claimed a State Trooper found him and a woman (not his wife) fully clothed in a Governor's Mansion utility closet. When Paterson became Governor after Hookergate, he and his wife had a weird press conference where they admitted extramarital affairs—and he later admitted using cocaine.

Paterson's approval numbers are very low and has been trailing Attorney General Andrew Cuomo in the polls. Still, in spite of low funds, Paterson has insisted he's running for governor this year.

Update: Governor Paterson's spokeswoman denies the possibility of a bombshell report. According to Gawker, Marissa Shorenstein said, "There is absolutely zero truth to these rumors. The governor is not resigning," and characterized the article as a "profile" that Paterson has been cooperating with.

Why, WHY!?...couldn't this have happened to Ruben Diaz or Karl Kruger.

  • learnedhand

Maybe this will drop along with the Michelle Obama "Whitey tape."

  • grizzzly

They're trying to drop this story like the iPad

He must be cleaning out his desk now.

i doubt it. i smell political smear, not substantive news here. he admitted to being a dog long ago.

I hope the wife swapping and cocaine rumors are true, and that what this means:

Finally, when asked whether or not anything that's going to be written in the forthcoming Times piece on Gov. Paterson could be described as scandalous, a "bombshell," or anything that might find itself in the public's general interest," Shorenstein gave a flat-out denial: "No."
is that the Governor will take the position on sex scandals that Clinton and Spitzer should have taken, and the position on drugs that Gary Johnson* takes.

But resigning and working on issues (ethics reform and now maybe this) would be a way to rebuild his career, as I've said before.

David Paterson and his crew have been a complete embarrassment to this state. His actions have simply caught up to him.

David Paterson has always been more interested in going to clubs, giving jobs to girlfriends and incompetents than he is in governing New York State.

The Democratic Conference Organizational and Structural Report detailing the workings of Paterson’s managerial style while he was Senate Minority leader is a true testament to this clowns ability to manage or more precisely mismanage.

This scathing report indicated that Paterson’s Senate Minority office, headed by the supremely incompetent Michael Jones Bey, was completely dysfunctional. Mr. Jones Bey, who is now incredulously Director of Empire State Development’s Office of Women and Minority Business Development, was reported to be more interested in partying and boozing up with staff than working.

If you want to get a glimpse of the chaos that occurred in Paterson’s Senate Minority office while Paterson was Minority Leader just hit on the link below.

I am sure that you will be outraged just as I and many other New Yorkers are.

In the end we must not only blame David Paterson for his failings. We must also lay blame to our beloved former love Guv Eliot Spitzer for failing to do his due diligence and putting David Paterson on the Democratic ticket.

  • doc of nyc

are u missing a lot here? spitzer having moral authority over patterson? sheesh!! nothing here bub, you just hate the guy personally. the issue is his getting the people's work done, this isn't even unusual most everywhere else in the world. now on that he could do better...if the media/powerbrokers/wall st. would stop screwing the general population stealing our money etc. or is it ours anymore?

  • Guest

will this be a running gag and a trend for every new york governor?

  • How about this: I don't care even a little what consenting adults do with their genitals?

  • Greenpoint60

This goes way back, Rocky died with his pants down

  • ides_of_march

I smell the Cuomo dirty tricks team at work. Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

  • doc of nyc

on call 25/8 all lies all of the time. cuomo's got some operation, eh? those campaign $$$s at work...

  • trafka

Why no one asks about the corruption all around this city? Our media don't run any stories about corruption , nothing 0% of their time, they don't investigate this stuff at all, then they pull out some bullshit news about cocaine or hoes like that's a factor in politics. In europe nobody cares if some governor or minister is cheating on his wife, but here that's worse than the fact that Patterson was corrupt from day one and his blindness was supposed to make us feel sorry for him

  • kade3000

This smells like a political mob style hit job. And i'll bet Cuomo is behind it, or at the very least has friends whom he knows are doing the hit. This Cuomo is a very very sneaky dirty guy. Not going after wall street, keeping quiet on his plans for gov's race. I dont normally go for conspiracy theories, but this one has all the makings. Cuomo is virtually walking into his post with his opponents going down with scandals, virtually no competition on election day. Wow..NY, we need to watch our potential next governor..I think he's responsible for clearing out Spitzer and Paterson, and helping Pierro hang herself.

  • Greenpoint60

No doubt Spitzer tried to insinuate himself in this

  • Spirit of 76

It's Ravitch! He's had his eye on the top job from the moment he was asked to be LG.

Well, it's as good a conspiracy theory as any.

  • longacre

This goes well beyond Andrew Cuomo. He's a shoo-in no matter what: what does he care if Paterson is kicked out a few months early?

Don't forget that Paterson has butted heads with the President himself and basically every important person in the Democratic party, i.e. Clinton, Schumer, etc. They're good at revenge.

  • doc of nyc

the Schumer/Gillebrand/Clinton/Obama dish wif a little spice of Caroline Kennedy & family sauce was the flavor in this game soup....if there is anything more to this but more juicy Wendy Williams stories. we shalll see.

yeh, it looks like Patterson's refusal to do his masters' (spelled wall st) bidding is paying off in a bad way! he'll get blamed for all of this, too. this is nothing but a sex scandal - good for publicity, but nothing more. on another note, on another politician who may also refuse to say no, "call me Harold!!!"

  • Spirit of 76

Assuming it's true, what does it matter where it came from? If a politician doesn't want his dirty laundry aired, he should stay on the straight and narrow, especially if his immediate predecessor went down in flames. Okay, I'm mixing metaphors left and right.

Starrygordon must be rolling over in his grave about his main man cratering. What? He's not dead? This just might put him in his grave.

  • doc of nyc

straight & narrow? if that's the standard who would get elected? you? i seriously doubt you're that clean.

i'm afraid we all have to grow up and accept to some extent that our leaders, inherently, are down & dirty scoundrels to some extent under the skin. we need to keep them looking kinda clean, but not to the extent we're blinded by their clensing bleach.

    and who's starrygordon?

  • Bouncy

Is there a reason to think that the supposed "bombshell" refers to bedroom (or...er...utility closet) activity? Unless hookers or minors are in the equation, I do not think infidelity calls for resignation.

  • MrCholly

My money is on Fred Dicker and Elizabeth Benjamin they both have had hard ons for the Governor from day one. It got worse when he reject the media's choice to replace Senator Clinton.

  • thefacts

"I dont normally go for conspiracy theories, but this one has all the makings. "

    A+

  • Rocknrope

I remember when he first took over for old black socks, and everyone seemed to like him and his sense of self-deprecating humor. That was a while ago.

  • We are going to get rick-rolled.

  • thefacts

The "bombshell" may be a lot worse than just "swinging", but, if not, it is further proof that Puritanism is still alive and well in America.

In Europe, his alleged affairs wouldn't even be news.

  • j0sh

To quote Fred Armesian as Patterson: "My life could not be more like a Richard Pryor movie."

  • nicemarmot

Why isn't there a "it's probably not very interesting" option?

  • inoyourider

This won't go away until he's either dropped out of, or lost, the next mayoral race.

What do we learn from this article?

    1) Paterson is a shady character.

    2) His approval numbers are low.

    3) He's behind in the polls.

    4) He hasn't got much money.

Who wrote this article, Andrew Cuomo?
