Audio: G Train Conductor Gives Performance of a Lifetime

02072010gtrain.jpg

The wackiness surrounding this weekend’s G Train service (no it won’t run, yes it will) is sure to make for lots of memorable moments, none better than this one we were tipped off to via Twitter. It’s audio someone recorded of the station stop announcements, performed (and I do mean performed) by one very classy motorman on the green snail line. “My 4am G Train voyage from Smith/9th to Metro was made beautiful thanks to this,” wrote the audio engineer on Poorly Washed Silverware. Listen here.

This can't be as bad as the Conductor on the G line last year when they were running a shuttle from Bedford-Nostrand . This guy thought he was still running the Long Island Railroad and would upon departure shout "All Aboard" over the P.A . I wonder if this is the same guy ?

My fav was in the C line at 9:40ish am, the conductor gave the proper info PLUS he greeted with such great attitude and wished a wonderful day to everybody at every stop...so much politeness and stubbornness in good character was impossible to be ignored, infectious.

Cute. Reminds me of the train conductor in the film The Ice Storm. I will say, though, the best conductor in my opinion is the guy I affectionately call Star Trek Man, who I occasionally hear on the R line. He sounds like Wharf or some similar character out of a TNG episode, and at least back in the day he used to add superfluous info about each stop. Where have you gone, Star Trek Man? It's been a while.

there used to be a wacky guy like that on the PATH train back in the day... but then then again, NJ is a magical place

    "this is a dirdy-diiiirdstreet-train-dirdydird watchthedooooorsplease."

  • Geoelh

Does anyone else remember a conductor on the N/W, who used to call out the stops in a lyrical Caribbean accent, elongating his vowals, popping the Bs in "Terty-ninth Aaaavenooo, Bee-Bee Aaaavenoo!"?

Or the old timer who called stops like he was calling the action at a Mets game?

  • eyeadore

I've heard this conductor a couple times on my G commute from WBG to Park Slope... it is pleasant though somewhat bewildering. If only the train ride were as swift as this audio makes it sound...

  • youngpro

i heard this guy the one and only time i've ever ridden the G (accidentally) and thought wtf, i love this.

reminds me of an old nigh watchmen meets the monopoly guy meets kramer's moviephone.

  • MacMuttonchops

    Male version of Oprah.

    "BROOOOOAAAADDDD-Way!"

  • DanielJ

Sounds like a mix between Kramer and Strong Bad.

last summer, this guy was one of the three or four conductors on the G who regularly did the late-night weekend shifts. he always did that voice, and he redeemed many a voyage.

  • atykk

If Michael Scott was a train conductor..

  • There are definitely a few of these funny conductors around.

  • Red Stapler

    HAHAHA!

He sounds like a Muppet! I can just see Sam the Eagle saying all of that.

  • atykk

I once had an interesting conversation with an awesome conductor on the B or D train. He told me that even though the MTA has a strict train announcement script, he likes to do different accents for the riders. It was great fun for him, and certainly for us to suddenly hear a British accent to "stand clear of the closing doors."

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Awsome, put him on the 1 line so I can enjoy as well

  • 610dean

Dear MTA please give this guy the coveted morning G train to Church Ave. slot so he can make my day every day. Thanks.

  • amsci

I just listened to this twice... it only gets funnier.

I imagine this gentleman with a pocketwatch and a big bushy mustache.

  • Wza

I think I remember that guy.

  • gothamguy

    Ditto.

This should be the voice of the subways from now on.

  • Egglantine

There was a conductor on the F/V line who would point out places of interest with each stop, such as for 23rd St., where "you can visit the birthplace of Teddy Roosevelt, who gave his name to the teddy bear..."

  • Tar_Baby

I was on his train years ago. Is he still around?

  • dr zippy

In their infinite wisdom the MTA will probably fire the guy.

  • theboneranger

    we need more of this.

  • theLtrain

Haha. It takes a lot to make a whole bunch of people riding the G train through bed stuy at 4 in the morning laugh.

  • laisla

i think you are getting on the wrong train.

The G train conductors around this time of night are always quite interesting.

  • commonman

    this dude wins the internet.
