Chef Defends NBC's Black History Month Menu

phpWYtvdVAM.jpg While it would be nice to blame NBC's Black History Month Menu-tastrophe on Jeff Zucker, the dishes offered yesterday (fried chicken, collard greens and black-eyed peas) were actually chosen by Leslie Calhoun... NBC's black chef.

Calhoun defended herself to the NY Post, saying, "All I wanted to do was make a meal that everyone would enjoy—and that I eat myself." But when ?uestlove showed up in the lunch line, he quickly Twittered the menu hanging up with the words, "Hmm, HR?"—a transmission that quickly spread via his 1MM+ followers. The chef says that yesterday the Roots drummer "requested the neck bone [cooked in] the black-eyed peas and fried chicken." But then she says he "got off the line, saying, 'This is racist.' The next thing you know, people were taking pictures of the sign and asking all the other black people in the cafeteria if this was racist. They said that it wasn't."

In the end the menu was removed, ?uestlove took some time off Twitter saying "now I must put out fire," and next week Calhoun plans to try again (her plan was to serve one special meal every Thursday during February). Meanwhile, last night Wanda Sykes addressed the menu on the Jay Leno Show, saying, "Jay, what is happening at NBC? Is the whole damn network on medical marijuana? What the hell is going on over here?"

This must be the set-up for a new NBC drama: Black Chef, serving irony and history on the same plate.

  • LB

  • NannyState

This whole mishegoss nearly bumped the Civil Rights Movement into a daytime time slot...

  • Kelles

Oh sure...Wanda Sykes would never say anything racist

  • Deport'emall!!!

I forget, when is White history month?

  • Kelles

But every month is White History Month

  • Guest

cool. thanks. i did not know that. i will go tell my friends. :)

  • LesDiggityDoo

What's on the Menu for "White History Month"?

  • Guest

it depends. some white people from the south will have stuff like 'turducken' (do not ask me what it is; it makes me want to vomit), while many whites in new york would like to have a 5-star french food if they can afford it--a lot of whites in new york don't seem to eat american food, at all.

  • nivek

McDonald's, with a side of butter made from corn-fed cows.

  • babyhitler

The most racist thing black people should definitely be protesting is Hollywood crime/murder mysteries. How the hell can black people make up 46% of criminals in prison and only make up like 5% of criminals portrayed in movies and television? When you watch law and order the criminal is always white! It's a travesty. Some black actor's paycheck is being stolen by a white actor. Al sharpton should get on this right away.

  • valeriob

He's busy avoiding tax collectors at the moment.

Otherwise he'd be all over that like white on... like black on...

    oh nevermind.

  • Rocknrope

So this is our world, where black people are calling other black people racist against black people, and everyone seems confused about it.

When are Kang and Kodos arriving to put us out of our misery?

  • inoyourider

But if that chef were white, they'd be fired on the spot and publicly humiliated by everyone...

    So who's racist, ?uestlove?

  • valeriob

Yes, clearly he is, and an attention whore to boot.

  • inoyourider

    Haha

    I told you so!

  • Gothamist_Cynic

So why don't they celebrate black history all year round? Why 1 month out of the entire year?

  • MFer

Al Roker ate all the leftovers.

  • bigmikebrooklyn

1995 called and they want their al roker joke back.

after the surgery, he projectile vomits if he eats more than a thimblefull of solid food.

also, 1997 called and they want their "1995 called..." joke back.

  • TheMactastic

Is it me or are you a little dissapointed that ?uestlove is eating at the NBC caffateria.

    Not very rock star.

  • Pachinko

For goodness sakes, try and show appreciation and get slapped for it. Defend the public and get arrested for it. Save a life and get sued for it. AMERICA IS FULL OF SELFISH IMBECILES. GROW EFFING UP!

  • virble

?uestlove is a really nice, intelligent guy.

  • "In Honor of Black History Month..."

How about NBC puts more black folks on in prime time?

  • NannyState

Are you kidding? That menu item disappeared decades ago.

  • PTG in nyc

For the few black people that find this food culture/heritage racist, maybe they should try to change their culture & heritage rather than bitch and moan when chefs get the menu spot on. This is so dumb.

I'm just waiting for Al Sharpton to weigh in, in which case you definitely know there's no merit to the bitching.

  • jles

I'm just happy Jay's band provided me with the "ba-dum-ching" so I knew when to laugh at Wanda.

  • babyhitler

so let me get this straight. A black person put up the menu cause another black person requested said items but then that black person got offended beacause of the menu and tweeted about it but then realized that he himself was the black person that requested said items and offended the black person who made the menu for that black person and now all these white people are angry.

  • handsomedevil

and now all these white people are angry.

Yes. Because this episode shows that Political Correctness is HORRIBLE! The reputation of the National Broadcasting Company was unfairly besmirched, and the people in the cafeteria could not enjoy their fried chicken in peace. It makes me cry just to think of it - I went to Nam to defend this country and look at what has happened. Obama, Tiger Woods, and Sharpton should all send that chef a personal letter of apology.

  • nicemarmot

I would have been really pissed if I worked there, was looking forward to my delicious fried chicken and cornbread, and then had it taken away by the pc brigade.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

who is questlove and how does he have over 1 million followers?

  • youngpro

he's a hiphop artist with the group 'The Roots'.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

ok thanks, I'll check him out on itunes tonight.

  • AnnaMerkin

He's actually a very talented drummer. Too bad he acted like a douche.

  • Krooklyn

way too sensitive. I call, not racist (yes I'm black).

  • Andrew_7396

the chef was black...err i mean... African American.

So calm down everyone, this wasn't the man's master plan to offend people.

  • dignam

Ridiculous. This is a classic southern menu, stick-to-yer-ribs awesomeness, perfected by African-Americans. We should be celebrating regional cuisines, especially by African-Americans, who are lauded for sports and musical talent but rarely for culinary accomplishments.

Now I think I'm going to fix myself some jambalaya and slander Cajuns.

  • Guest

while some people seem to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of control being sensitive, as long as the chef didn't mean to berate anyone or any race, then this isn't a problem at all.

so many people seem to be assuming lots of things and create more problems. there should be a book to educate people about assuming: the art of assumption. hah

  • Guest

anyone who calls others racist may be in danger of being racists themselves--they're not exactly in the innocent ground here, especially if that's how they see the world...

...and i can only imagine how that person sees him/herself and others.

  • ides_of_march

    KKKFC

  • bigmikebrooklyn

the KKK took my kfc away, they took it away, they took it away...

  • NannyState

Ringing Ringing ringing up the FBI, ask them if my baby's alive...

Ringing ringing ringing up the President, find out where my baby went...

  • Jackie Curtis

Once again, much to do about nothing.

    Jalapeno corn bread sounds de-lic-ious!

  • tom9d

One thing I'll never understand is why people consider it racist to associate food like fried chicken and watermelon with black people.

Everyone assumes Italians like pasta, Irish folks eat potatoes, Chinese people love what we call Chinese food, and Hispanics dig their...Hispanic food. And that's all fine. But God forbid you acknowledge that black people eat fried chicken. Because that must mean you hate black people.

Also, is that Sasha Gray in the American Apparel ad?

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

arroz y frijoles. (rice and beans). Polo-chicken tend to be a dish of the Caribbean (Cuba, Dominican Republic etc)

  • youngpro

    WEPA!

  • tom9d

    Either way, delicious.

  • CubanB

    Arroz con pollo, baby.

    And that shit is good.

  • youngpro

it's a catch 22- NBC is damned if they DONT honor black history month, and damned if they do with a different take on lunch. fuck the p.c. crowd.

  • JacqueMehoff

paula dean makes good fried chicken, the pink teacup makes good fried chicken. I think it's more of a "southern" food, if anything. the sign was a bit off putting but it is the cafeteria staff not HR.

  • OTC

I'll have to remember this when they're serving corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day.

  • tijuanatornado

    @hotstepper:

Agreed.... boooo someone called me a name!.... I'm going to cry to mommy!.... seriously... just grow up!

  • Gregoire

Quite honestly, that menu sounds delicious. Leslie Calhoun can cook for me any day.

  • maryjr

I'm afraid I don't understand the problem. If it was Italian-American month and the menu was pizza, lasagne and meatballs would there be a backlash?

Those seem like southern specialties to me.

  • TrippinJoJo

look at the response that MTV Jersey Shore got from the "Italian American" community.

People of all ethnicities, race etc need to stop raising the race card and get over it. for fux sake.

  • Steven

Another story blown out of proportion because of the Internet.

  • hotstepper

    and ?uestlove is a douche.

  • valeriob

This really aggravates me. What a dick.

    (hey whatadick, you're slacking!)

  • hotstepper

its not funny, its pathetic. people need to stop being so sensitive and grow the fuck up.

  • Potty Boy

100%. And get a life too.
