Junior High Student Arrested for Doodling in Class

020510arrest.jpg
In this file photo, a dangerous perp is apprehended by police.
For years the NYPD has tried to send a clear message to the NYC student body that there is zero tolerance for defacing DOE property; in 2007 cops made an example of 13-year-old Chelsea Fraser by dragging her out in handcuffs after she wrote "okay" on a desk at her Dyker Heights school. It's NOT okay, Chelsea, but these punks just won't learn. On Monday 12-year-old Alexa Gonzalez was "doodling" her little heart out on her desk in Junior High School 190 in Forest Hills when she got busted, handcuffed, and escorted to the police precinct across the street, where she was detained for several hours.

The vandal-in-training was using what she says was erasable marker to write "Lex was here 2/1/10'' and "I love my friends Abby and Faith'' on her desk. Harmless "doodle" or wanton destruction of taxpayer property? "I started crying, like, a lot," Alexa told the Daily News. "I made two little doodles. ... It could be easily erased. To put handcuffs on me is unnecessary...I just thought I'd get a detention. I thought maybe I would have to clean [the desk]." Her mother, an accountant, said, "She's been throwing up. The whole situation has been a nightmare." But surely suing the city could make all those bad dreams go away! (The NYCLU has already sued the city over excessive school arrests.)

Alexa was released without bail, and has been assigned eight hours of community service, a book report and an essay on what she's learned from the experience, the AP reports. She says she has now "definitely learned not to ever draw on a desk." And yet the DOE is essentially apologizing; a spokesman tells the News, "Based on what we've seen so far, this shouldn't have happened."

Even the NYPD is backpedaling, with spokesman Paul Browne saying, "Even when we're asked to make an arrest, common sense should prevail, and discretion used in deciding whether an arrest or handcuffs are really necessary." Kids, the lesson is clear: the NYPD is getting soft on doodling!

Welcome to the wonderful police state of NYC, thanks to Bloomburg

  • hunter.blatherer

When this happened to me I just got corporal punishment from the teacher. But then, I was much younger than this girl, so maybe that accounts for the difference.

  • People should be arrested for using "like".

Are you effing kidding? Are you retarded? "I started crying, like, a lot,"

Here's some advice: I started crying because I did not like the way I was being treated.

  • LB

Like Really ? Like I'm Like Totally Like Agreeing with you ! Lol

  • LB

I agree, They should do that to every single one they catch defacing school property ! Your there to learn , Not destroy shit ! Good for the DOE .

  • NannyState

    Doodling is the match

    Lego guns are the fuse

And suing the shit out of the NY Public Schools is Da Bomb!

  • pissflaps

dang, i'd be doing a life sentence if that were the case when i was her age...

  • robingee

How about arresting all of the ADULTS that throw trash out of the windows of their cars in Brooklyn, making it a fricking mess for everyone? If they want to enforce laws to make this borough more pleasant to live in, there's a place to start.

  • ProcedureTurn

    Robingee-

Concerning that avatar of yours withthe spray paint alien/octopuss/ufo thing... is that you who scrawls it on the walls too?

    Just wondering.

  • robingee

OMG ya got me! I have a picture of the alien graffiti so therefore I'm not allowed to say that litter sucks. I would rather see a million cartoon aliens on the streets than the trash that these pig toss out of their windows and leave at the BUS STOP on their way to work. We're living IN A SOCIETY!

  • Guest

a few years ago in my apartment building, there was a resident who routinely threw eaten chicken bones out of his/her window...

...until apparently someone got hit by a stray flying chicken bone and put a sign on my building door addressing to the neanderthal who is throwing out chewed-up chicken bones.

i'm just amazed that some people just live like that. i still can't fully accept it.

  • robingee

My friend had an apt in the East Village, and everyone would just throw their trash out the window into the closed-off alley between the buildings. Because... it's NOT disgusting, smelly and rat-infested? It was just something everyone did. Unacceptable.

  • SDoyel

Since this was clearly a case of defacing/marring tax-payer property, a more natural and logical consequence would be to send the student home with the desk and tell the parents basically "you broke it, you bought it." It now becomes their desk and their daughter does not return to school until a new one is paid for and replaces the one their daughter ruined. Parents should be held accountable for their children's actions. Handcuffing her now has made her the 'victim' when clearly she is the culprit.

  • ItchyGoiter

you mess with the bull and you'll get the horns!!

  • PathToWisdom

This is one of the best ideas from NYC.

    Why?

Who do you think will put graffitis on your wall, and our subways in the future if you don't stop their

    habits now?

Arrest them, let them know it is wrong.

And the cops have nothing better to do.

So, it is good practice for cops. A win-win situation.

  • Splicer

I'll gladly add that this is some of the stupidest shit I've ever heard coming from the NYPD. Are arrests like this in lieu of cleaning up their own house? Just asking.

  • ocm123

I almost guarantee that this was done or at least led by School Safety agents, not the regular police.

  • ilovejapgirls

if schools were this strict back in the 90's we wouldn't have bad kids like we do today

  • Guest

the kid being arrested is waaaaaaaaaay out of control. sure, some people get angry at idiots defacing desks, etc. just learn to let go...

...and then make fun of her for doodling. it works.

  • Steven

This has to be a joke? Why aren't the NYPD looking for rapists and murders on the street? Wasting resources for silly stuff?

The girl gets detention and needs to clean it off the desk along with other desks in the classroom. Who called in the NYPD for this anyway?

I don't really see a problem with this.

Also, "I love my friends Abby and Faith" is one helluva long doodle.

  • Tempogain

Only two arrests in three years? Have another donut! That's gotta be about a 0.000000001 arrest rate. It's time for secret surveillance or a gestapo tattletale campaign.

  • HOTCUP

8 hours of community service i can understand, but in addition to that, a BOOK REPORT and an ESSAY??? jesus christ.

god forbid this kid wants to become a senator or something someday, punishing her was really worth the arrest record and the humiliation in the press.

  • JenChungsBaby

I assume she will not have to answer "yes" to the universal job application question "Have you ever been arrested?"

  • Snoopy

    Flash forward ten years:

A local woman, 23 year old Chelsea Fraser who has a long rap sheet dating back to 2010 including destruction of government property as well as pornographic graffiti in or near where adolescent children were known to frequent, has been re-arrested today on suspicion of leaving a Target store in Mahwah, New Jersey by way of the entrance door.

When, might this reporter ask, are these career criminals going to be locked up for good?

  • tom9d

    "I just thought I'd get a detention."

...and yet you wrote on the desk anyway. Which is precisely the reason detention isn't enough. That said, it's a pretty big leap from detention to jail. Hah.

  • jaycjay

No doubt she meant after she was caught and confronted, she thought the result would be detention, not that she planned it in advance thinking that would be the punishment.

  • JenChungsBaby

WHAT I LEARNED FROM MY EXPERIENCE

    by Alexa Gonzalez

When I was handcuffed by the police for writing on my desk at school I learned that some adults are really fucking stupid.

    THE END.

  • Wza

    lol!

  • Mr. Shankly

Thanks for giving O'Reilly one more stupid thing to rant over, guys.

  • Malcolm Tucker

If we had a zero tolerance policy towards morons, who would we find to work at the DOE?

  • SighR

    STREET CRED!

  • kc2slg

Whatever happened to being kept after school to scrub every desk in the room?

Oh right, it would hurt the precious baby's self esteem and take work away from the janitors' union.

  • chuzzlewit

YOU, SIR, WILL COMETIZE EVERY DESK IN THIS ROOM TOMORROW AFTER SCHOOL. (cometize?? wtf?)

  • jibbly

COMET! It makes your teeth turn green!

    COMET! It tastes like gasoline!

    COMET! It makes you vomit!

So buy some COMET and vomit today!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet_(28song)

  • etypical

That's what I recall the punishment being. People in "power" have really lost their collective pea-brain.

  • imadick

why dont they arrest the wall street fat cats! they're the real criminals!

  • imadick

she was crying? is that really relevant? you wouldn't stop the handcuffs if a boy started crying. this double-standard is really getting to me!

  • Rocknrope

Doodling today. Tomorrow, girl on girl action in the school supply closet and being caught by the janitors.

Oh wait, I'm describing teacher activity. My bad.

  • potsmoker

an adult putting handcuffs on a 12 yr old girl for doodling on a desk must really have problems sleeping well at night.

i say the parent is also lacking, if you actually had to go to court over this you should have asked for a trial or pleaded not guilty, or whatever you do in family court. Just take community service is another way the poor pay for bs crimes they refuse to fight, the judge, cops, school adminsitrators or anybody involved in this case should be fired.

  • Dirk

Between this incident, the woman who got arrested at Best Buy, and the kid with the Lego gun, I'm beginning to think everyone has lost their minds. How about using some COMMON SENSE people? Christ... these people are not murders and rapists.

  • hotstepper

such is life in the nation of fear.

  • jibbly

Doodler today, the bane of Peter Valone tomorrow!

This is just as dumb as suspending a kid for bringing a 2 inch Lego toy gun to school.

Dear schools, stop trying to turn kids into criminals for shit they've been doing since forever.

  • korper

Indeed, very interesting seeing this right next to the Lego gun story.

In my school, it was amazing to find any desk that wasn't carved up in graffiti -- & they arrest her for erasable marker?? It's a world gone mad.

  • farleft

She should have wrote, "Lex was here 2/1/10'' on the jail cell walls also.
