Daily Show Has Fun with NYC Terror Trials, Mayor Worried About Money

012810Bloombergeag.jpg Mayor Bloomberg spoke out today against having the upcoming terror trials in NYC, although he seems more concerned about the expense than the safety issues. “It would be great if the federal government could find a site that didn’t cost a billion dollars, which using downtown will,” Bloomberg told reporters. The Mayor said he'd be "very happy" if they could find another location for the trials, and joins an increasing number of people against having the trials here. Previously, the Mayor had been in support of the trials, and even called the trials proximity to the WTC "fitting."

Daily Show host John Stewart gave his made comic japes about the trials, and concluded last night, "Yes, when it comes to prosecuting the war on terror, Fox News agrees with Osama Bin Ladin." Correspondent Wyatt Cerac followed with his own report on these really inconvenient trials, and asked why we even need trials in the first place:

In case you missed it, a lot of other people are having very mixed feelings about the upcoming terror trials: Brooklyn Heights residents are split about it, community board 1 is lobbying the President to relocate, others are demanding it move to White Plains or Governor's Island. And Dick Cheney's sitting glumly somewhere grumbling to himself.

“It is fitting that 9/11 suspects face justice near the World Trade Center site where so many New Yorkers were murdered,” Mr. Bloomberg said."

"“It would be great if the federal government could find a site that didn’t cost a billion dollars, which using downtown will,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

“It’s going to cost an awful lot of money and disturb an awful lot of people,” he said. “Can we provide security? Yes. Could you provide security elsewhere? Yeah, and I mean — the suggestion of a military base is probably a reasonably good one. Relatively easy to supply — to provide security. They tend to be outside of cities so that they don’t disrupt other people.”

The community board who's also opposed to holding the trials downtown suggests Stewart Air Force Base, West point and Otisville.

There's also Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn that would meet both the definitions of both of Bloomberg's statements- that the site not be in downtown, but near it.

Don't try to defend yourself about charging such a ridiculous amount of money to have a trial at a place where no one else wants it.. by now, we all know how you do business
