Woman Dies After Botched Queens Abortion

01262010hanger.jpg

A one-stop gynecology/plastic surgery clinic in Jackson Heights is under investigation after a woman died from complications during a routine abortion. The 30-year-old victim is believed to have visited the A-1 Medical clinic at 95-45 Roosevelt Avenue for an abortion on Monday, but things went wrong when an artery was severed during the operation. Bleeding profusely, she was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital where she was pronounced dead, reports 1010WINS. The second-floor physician's office, whose sign advertises gynecology and plastic surgery, actually specializes in laser wrinkle surgery, skin depigmentation and liposuction.

An investigation is looking into whether the Queens clinic is licensed to do abortions at all, and if so whether the doctor was qualified. As of today the cut-rate facility was still scheduling appointments for the procedure.

does anyone happen to know who the doctor who did this is?

  • hunter.blatherer

How can they be allowed to still schedule (and presumably perform?) more procedures? That's shocking.

  • Thinky Think

The combination of gyn/plastic should send off warning signs.Probably some ediots that like playing with knives calling themselves doctors.

"A one-stop gynecology/plastic surgery clinic in Jackson Heights..."

Or you could always try the one-stop nail parlor/dentist or barber/proctologist in Bed-Stuy if you're in a pinch.

  • Snoopy

I've been looking for a good barber surgeon for a few years now. Since I left Pratt for Manhattan they are hard to find.

  • Thinky Think

Funny thing is in the olden days the barbers where surgeons that's where the red in the barber pole comes from so you wish is possible:-)

  • Clarice City

Ah yes. Myrtle Ave. It's so much more than just fried chicken/ hair extension supply stores and check casher/liquor stores.

  • Snoopy

Shouldn't the Name "A-1 Medical clinic" tip you off that it's not quality health care being offered? That and the second floor location.

  • HughGass

I'm all for abortion, aids, fatty, B&T, and racial jokes, but a coat hanger graphic? C'mon.

  • imadick

    that's a pro-choice icon. buy yourself a history book.

  • LaliP

yeah, i get, safe abortions vs. back-alley-botch jobs, but since that doesn't seem to be the case here, it's giving the opposite impression. it's in poor taste. since when did gothamist want to offend its readers?

  • Susan5

A one-stop gynecology/plastic surgery clinic is close enough to a back alley abortion. That icon always as a great reminder of what pro-choice activists fight for -- legal and SAFE abortion.

  • longacre

More appropriate (read: more tasteless) photo.

  • LaliP

yes, i was going to write the same thing. gothamist: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU????? replace the photo and have respect for a LEGAL, and what should be SAFE, medical proedure. your photo is sending the message you are anti-choice.

what a tragedy for the young woman's friends & family.

  • Clarice City

I guess it could be interpreted as a pro choice icon but, in this context it comes across as snarky and insincere.

  • Dead Himmler

It's hilarious that you guys are so offended by the picture but can't really decide which side it's for.

  • LaliP

yeah, so funny. an empowering symbol from the 70s mistaken to be relevant today. ha ha. are you a woman who screams at men who open the door for you? update: no longer cool. just like this image is no longer "cool" or necessary. sorry, i just don't like the pic.

I agree with Clarice City..this image comes across as snarky and insincere. why did ALL journalists decide over the past few years to deliver us news with "personality"? i actually have my own personality and don't need you to make up my mind or provide witty commentary. i'm quite capable of doing that myself.

women won the right for a safe and legal medical procedure and this irrelevant graphic is diminishing a straight up tragedy. did this facility have a license for this procedure? were the doctors negligent? what's the story here? 27 years after roe v. wade, women should NOT be dying. let's get back to the issue at hand.

  • Clarice City

Thank you. That was my reaction as well. Pretty tasteless, indeed.

  • Clarice City

    intended for hughgass...
