Park Slope Parrot Escapes, Returns

parkslopeparrot.jpg This isn't really as exciting as the recent MIdtown macaw rescue, but last week the Brooklyn Paper spread the word that an African Grey Parrot had gone missing near Flatbush Avenue in Park Slope. The bird—named Gracie—belonged to Lora Myers, who kept him as a pet for 12 years.

Gracie, who went missing last Thursday, was miraculously found and returned by Saturday—the paper reports back today through Myers, who told them the woman who found her precious pet "was watching Treasure Island... when she heard the chirp and noticed Gracie sitting on her windowsill, 12 stories up!" After coaxing the parrot inside, she went online and discovered a missing bird listing, but the couple who showed up were disappointed to see it wasn't their missing bird. For some reason they took him home anyway, and called the Center for Animal Care and Control. It was the organization who called Myers, who had filed Gracie as missing days earlier.

Myers declares: "He survived three nights on the mean streets and was lucky he was rescued! I could not be happier.” But will Gracie try to escape again? Maybe he wanted to meet his Brooklyn parrot brethren.

Why do people who claim to love animals keep birds? I can imagine no greater affront to the nature of a bird than to keep it in a cage.

Actually, bird experts say it's not advisable to keep a parrot (or any other pet bird) in a cage all the time. You're supposed to allot a certain amount of quality time each day for it to be out of its cage to fly around, bond with you...and wreck your apartment.

Lora Myers [clueless parrot owner]: "You know what’s really annoying? I called the police station to ask if I could report it and they said they don’t do that. I find that outrageous."

Officer, I'd like to report a missing parrot...
