While I often disagree with PETA tactics (the "sea kittens" thing was a debacle, as was the whole "Obama killing the mosquito" thing), I'm perfectly OK with this one.

Is it an attention whore thing to do? Yes. But that's what PETA has to resort to. How many guys have now watched that video just cuz it's Sasha Grey?

Animal rights activists have a really hard time getting people to listen. Everyone loves animals and everyone wants to help but the second you try to show someone a video of what Ringling Bros. actually does to elephants, it's "Oh I can't watch that! Please don't tell me!" Or they engage you in a conversation about your eating habits but then get angry when you actually tell them what happened to the pig on their plate!

It is incredibly hard getting through to you omnivores! PETA is just trying to get you to pay attention any way it can.

PETA doesn't have a strategy. "Getting people to listen" is NOT a strategy.

A STRATEGY is to get people to treat animals ethically! Getting their attention is only the first step. PETA seems to have not thought of what to do past that point. Their strategy is two points 1. Get attention. 2. Tell them hurting animals is bad. That's it?

A good strategy has a realistic GOAL: Reduce animal cruelty. How can you reach that goal? 1. Get attention. 2. Tell them how easy it is to not hurt animals. 3. Tell them "what's in it for them." 4. Prove how it will make them better.

You can never, ever change someone's mind. You can only LEAD them to something they already believe, and then, if you're really good, the person will change his mind *all by himself.* If you want to convince a reluctant public, you cannot talk down to them and hope something sticks.

For example, gory anti-smoking ads like the voicebox man or the missing-fingers woman are generally ineffective. People see those ads and their minds switch off. If I were at PETA, I would show, for example, how eating meat just once a week saves money. You can throw on extra spices and portabello mushrooms on spaghetti to make it tastier, have a website with accessible, non-meat recipes such as spaghetti with sauce or a baked potato, not something so "hippy-dippy-vegetarian-ish" like faux-tofurky mock-dogs with couscous. You'll never convert a meat eater to a vegetarian, it can only done by choice by the individual. A more realistic goal is to reduce his meat intake, cutting down the demand for meat. Eventually, some of these reduced meat eaters will naturally go "all the way" and become vegetarians, after they realize how easy it is.

Show how, in this economy, how cow's milk will spoil after just a couple days, ruining a post-hangover bowl of frosted flakes, but soy milk will last much longer, perfect for the single apartment bachelor. These are not brilliant ideas but you can see where I'm going with this, and I can guarantee I can get the most die-hard meat eater to try some hearty spaghetti a lot easier than showing him a naked girl who says "don't kill animals."

You're right, StrawbrryF. You can see how difficult it is to get any unconventional ideas across by the fact that every time another PETA adventure is written up in this blog, the same stupid comments are recycled.
