Man Killed in Party Van Pothole Collision

01182010pothole.jpg Marty Markowitz and The Department of Transportation got another wake-up call on Sunday when a Brooklyn man died after hitting a giant pothole. The 32-year-old driver of a packed Honda Odyssey was thrown from his side window after hitting the hole and then slamming into a telephone pole. He ended up on the pavement near the corner of Kings Highway and Tilden Avenue in East Flatbush, and the car landed on top of him. He died at Brookdale University Hospital shortly after the crash at 3:30 a.m. "The van was on top of the driver," one witness told the NY Daily News. "They had to jack up the vehicle to get it off him." His five passengers, who told officials they were coming from a nearby club, were injured but are expected to survive. "It's crazy—I'm absolutely shocked," said another witness. "I've never seen an accident this bad."

Potholes aren't that dangerous to anything but rims and suspension components if you're not driving at well over the 35 mph speed limit that's in place on Kings Highway. And being thrown out a window isn't very likely if you're wearing a seatbelt.

This shouldn't be considered a wakeup call to the DOT, but to careless and dangerous drivers.

What does Marty Markowitz have to do with the DOT? As Brooklyn Borough President, Markowitz's duties as an advocate for Brooklyn are mainly ceremonial. Like other borough presidents, Markowitz may or may not *advise* the mayor on local borough issues, but his ceremonial position actually carries very little power.

Markowitz is a bit of a showman (clown?). Perhaps you've seen one of the many silly highway signs Marty had put up in Brooklyn and thus concluded that he has more influence with the DOT; however, that's certainly not the case.

Here's just a couple of Marty's looney signs:

Many thanks, Marty, for using our tax dollars to perpetuate a stereotype!
