In Haiti: Fruit Roll-Ups and Scientologists to the Rescue

Members of NY's Urban Search and Rescue team used power tools to help pull four Haitians from the rubble of Port-au-Prince this weekend. Among them was a young girl who survived four days trapped in a grocery store. Another group, the Church of Scientology, used the texts of L. Ron Hubbard in their rescue efforts.

Since arriving in Haiti the 80-person team from NY has helped in four against-the-odds rescues. Just hours after landing members extracted two men and a young girl from the wreckage of a grocery store. The girl said she survived by eating the Haitian equivalent of fruit leather. Later on, the FDNY-NYPD squad pulled another man from where he was trapped in the top floor of a three-story apartment building. They used a rescue camera to find him, and then attacked the rubble with jackhammers and saws. "The best feeling was when he stuck his arm through the hole and he shook your hand," Detective Randy Miller told the NY Daily News. Other rescues around the city included a 2-month-old baby, CNN reported, and a Danish employee of the United Nations.

Scientologists are waging their own attempt to save the earthquake-annihilated island, which they've long targeted in their recruitment efforts. A plane full of Scientologists left JFK for Haiti on Saturday, chartered by none other than John Travolta. "I have arranged for a plane to take down some volunteer ministers and some supplies and some medics," said the Battlefield Earth star. WPIX reported that, despite the religion's dubious medical practices, 50 doctors were on board the aircraft. Hopefully they'll do more than distribute literature. According to Scientology News's Twitter, another group is on its way today.

I remember Scientologists were down there at the WTC during the search and rescue and they stayed to offer any help they could long after. I don't remember them trying to push their ideology on us and I can tell you it wouldn't have been tolerated by anyone. They wanted to help, they did, and we were grateful. I suspect they'll be helpful in Haiti too.

    That's interesting, and a lie.

Official reports (ie. newspapers; members of the Red Cross, NYPD, FDNY; etc) state that Volunteer Ministers were actually kicked out of the Ground Zero site because they brought no supplies, their actions were disruptive to the rescue efforts, and they were actively preventing people from receiving trauma counseling.

Based upon statements by Volunteer Ministers, they actually SNUCK BACK IN, ie. avoided the police line, and then infiltrated themselves into the medical tents so they could distribute booklets and pamphlets.

That's all they did, hand out little pamphlets and break the law. Even the detoxification program offered by the Church of Scientology and its front group, Narconon (not to be confused with a LEGITIMATE group with a similar name, NarcAnon), is completely without any scientific backing.

The whole thing is a con, and while these people have the noblest of intentions, their efforts are doing nothing more than causing harm and danger to the people they want to help while furthering the agenda of a dangerous, criminal organization.

After all, the road to hell is PAVED with good intentions, and the Volunteer Ministers are paving away a mile a minute.

Ask them for a "proof of Claim".

They will default because they always LIE.

To prove it yourself, just walk into any of their so called churches, and you will see that they NEVER have more than one to two people there, studying or taking auditing.

They fool you by counting book sales as members. They have many empty buildings but less and less members.

    1) Where the hell is The Catholic Church in this mess, besides leaving? Despicable.

    2) Why are Scientologists, it seems to me, using this disaster to promote themselves? Despicable.

Scientology vs. Vodou? Is that even a contest? *shakes rattle*

I think scientology is the last thing the haitians need right now.Let's not forget haitians are a strong people and not easily swayed.

    > I agree it's a scam for money..I disagree with the "nothing more"..many of it's lower level theories eg: the tone scale, arc ( affinity, reality, communication) the components of understandings, the science of survival..etc..are practical and useful. Unfortunately, this is the cheese that baits the trap..

Scientologists? Jesus, hasn't Haiti suffered enough?

  • Karen

They could do something useful...use copies of hubbards books to prop up damaged buildings.

Or just as fuel. Once you get them going, paperbacks can give out a good bit of energy. That would be the most "green" thing the Co$ has ever done.

Man, I shudder to think what John "Im not gay anymore" Travolta and David Miscavige's brainwash squad are up to down there. Despicable crooks are no doubt looking to ake advantage of Haitian's vulernability.

Sorry if i sound negative, but if you do some research you'll find Scientology is a scam for money and power and nothing more.
