Malfunction Shuts Down Reactor at Indian Point Power Plant

011210nuke.JPG Don't be alarmed, but a reactor at that nuclear power plant 35 miles north of the city was shut down yesterday, after a malfunction at 4 p.m. Details are still sketchy, but it's being reported that the main electrical generator malfunctioned "safely," triggering an automatic shutdown of the reactor. The plant's owner assures WPIX there was absolutely no threat posed to workers, nor to the excellent people of Peekskill. (But for future reference, here's the "Indian Point Emergency Guide.") The incident comes 66 days after another generator malfunction shut down the plant, and 600,000 gallons of boiling, radioactive water turned to steam and was released over the lower Hudson Valley. Also in November, a report found thyroid cancer cases in counties closest to the plant are the highest in New York State, and among the highest in the U.S.

    OH PLEASE!

If the ELECTRICAL generator malfunctioned, that's just it an electrical problem. The nuclear reactor is to the concern here. Nuclear plants in the US put out less radioactivity into the environment than a medical patient after getting a radium enema. Think about that for a minute.

Random pockets of disease are used by demagogues to inspire fear because people don't understand statistics. Nothing in nature is perfectly and evenly distributed. Everything comes out in clumps and averages out. Years ago we had people claiming that electrical power lines were creating cancer pockets in Long Island. That turned out to be nonsense.

Radical leftist environmentalist want us all to go back to Rousseau's "Noble Savage" lifestyle; no coal, no oil, no hydro, no nuclear, all the while typing their screeds on computers. A sort of suicide fantasy for civilization. Funny thing is that the Noble Savage idea only exists in movies like Avatar. Which, by the way, required the most advanced film making technology to depict the most perfect and unrealistic anti-human story suicide fantasy yet.

    P.S.

I knew that this was a Del Signore story immediately. Typical.

wow, and here i thought i had written the stupidest post possible on this.

    QUAID, START THE REACTOR

    Run Tootie, Run!

It's insane that one of the most unstable nuclear power plants in the country is so dangerously close to the densest city.

  • Unstable? Where's your data?

  • DarkGemini

And sits on a fault line. You forgot to mention that the plant sits directly on a massive fault line.

Should the east coast ever experience even a moderate quake, we're all hosed.

  • imadick

so move. if you don't love it, leave it.

  • jibbly

Yes, because that's the answer to all of life's problems.
