Cyclist Identified In Fatal Delancey Street Collision

2010_1_cyclistmemorial.jpg

The bike rider who was run over by a school bus and killed on Delancey Street has been identified as 35-year-old Fuen Bai. The East Village resident reportedly crashed after hitting a pothole near the corner of Orchard Street and was backed over by the bus. In the days since the fatal collision — for which the driver wasn't charged — Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said his office would look into the incident. Cycling activists have put up a memorial for the biker, which reads:

Though we never met I mourn your passing. My heart broke at the news of the tragic loss of your life on this street. I too ride daily these dangerous streets, and had we met, would surely have had many stories to tell. I hope to see you in heaven and maybe share a ride with you there. I am sure the streets are in much better condition.

seems she was not 35, but actually 74. not sure why so many reports say she's younger.

A friend of mine was a personal friend of the victim, and she was actually an older woman, not 35.

Banning bikes in the city is an absurd idea. I think education is the key because for as many stupid drivers out their, there are just as many stupid bikers, and I notice this everyday riding my bike to work. Bikers need to ride with the flow of traffic, this goes out to you Mr. Delivery Food Man, and cars need to not use their cars as tanks.

This woman hit a pole, then bailed and landed behind the bus. Nobody is really at fault here except for the pole.

  • LeFabe

she hit a pothole, not a pole. So the street's shitty condition is to blame, but she is also apparently a shitty bike handler.

A good crash can happen to anyone. I had a spectacular crack-up in Flushing Meadows last week on a bike bath, resulting in almost two dozen stitches in my knee, among other problems. I hit black ice. Nothing much I could have done besides wear my helmet and sport glasses and otherwise dress for conditions, which I did.

I thank God it didn't happen on a street.

I ride responsibly, stopping at red lights and for pedestrians. But I also have to do the job of many drivers who don't bother to signal or use their mirrors, guessing their movements. I actually was yelled at by a guy pulling out of a parking space because I was in his way - on the bike path. He didn't signal. His suggestion was that I constantly ring a bike bell to alert drivers. He was shocked when I suggested he signal and use his mirrors. Everyone's got to be more responsible -- walkers, drivers, and bikers.

thank you for your common sense. i'm an avid bike rider but i realize the need for cars as well. if we'd all ditch this cyclist vs driver mentality and just paid more attention, lives would be saved.

If you make an observation like that, you either aren't paying attention to what you're doing or you're typing too fast or you're impaired. In which case you shouldn't be typing.

Bicyclists are nothing more than two wheeled pedestrians. They don't for the most part give a shit or are aware about anyone or anything around them but themselves.

They get popped because they either think the world is centered around their being or they are bopping to some ipod tune.

    STAY ALERT! STAY ALIVE!

So it's always the cyclists fault that he gets run over and killed because cyclists are self centered and distracted? You've never been on a bike in any of the boroughs have you? In which case you should just shut the f*ck up and smoke yourself to sleep.

If you hit and kill someone with your car, you either aren't paying attention to what you're doing or you're driving too fast or you're impaired. In which case you shouldn't be driving.

    When's the ghost bike installation?

  • Snoopy

Just as motorcycles are required to turn on their headlights during day time, bicyclists should be required to wear "safety" vests while cycling in the city. And those vest should also have large license numbers on their backs which say they are licensed to bike in the city.

Motorists cannot avoid objects they can't see.

  • gawkthis

and buses should be required to have closed-circuit cameras for the driver to be able to see behind him. they're not especially expensive and they're cheap if they save a life. also the bus should be required to have a backup alarm, and the bike drivers should be required to give way to the bigger vehicles who are not as nimble as the bike rider.

will any of these happen? nah.

  • jpeditor

" and the bike drivers should be required to give way to the bigger vehicles who are not as nimble as the bike rider."

Kind of tough since he was already lying on the ground behind the bus....

"The East Village resident reportedly crashed after hitting a pothole near the corner of Orchard Street and was backed over by the bus."

  • Snoopy

I agree with your observation unfortunately.

  • thewildpansy

I drive and I also ride a bike. Both are good for different reasons. Now you can't call me a cyclist or a driver, juts a normal person. Stupid FUCKS.

  • hunter.blatherer

Mouth breather. It's the only thing you do all the time.

  • thewildpansy

You're just sad that you stupid fucks make up "sides" when in reality most people who ride bikes also use a car or a taxi often or sometimes.

  • Dead Himmler

You need to pick a side. This is a war on the roads and we, the cars, are winning. In fact we are shutting them out. I believe the score was 10 to 0 last year.
