Inmate and disbarred lawyer Lynne Stewart has been selected by WBAI listeners to serve on the station's board of directors, even though she doesn't even have access to a radio. The 70-year-old civil-rights fighter was sentenced to 28 months in prison for helping a radical Islamic leader she represented smuggle messages to his followers in Egypt. Stewart claimed she was being a "zealous advocate" for her client, Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, nonetheless she was found guilty of conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists.

The activist has support in WBAI, 99.5 FM, founded by pacifist Lew Hill. In September the station held a fundraiser for Stewart and now the New York Post reported listeners have chosen her to serve on the station's board through an online poll. It's still unclear how she'll fulfill her duties but according to her website , she's working on getting FM reception.

f-stop -- you don't know what a "jury trial" means? the government didn't find her guilty

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

This was the govt message to any lawyer that challenges the govt disregard for the constitution. All corporate lawyer scumbags are rewarded by this govt but civil rights attorneys are incarcerated.

The federal prosecuters didn't have a case so they played footage of the world trade center collapsing. The judge permitted this outrageous behavior by the prosecuters so the jury were heated and wanted someone to blame. Lynne was the scapegoat.

  • Angelheaded Hipster

the jury disagreed with you, boys

bow to the majesty of the system

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Nope and please post these non existing messages. You're wrong.

  • potsmoker

she was passing information on his opinions on political matters. how its interpretted by his followers was not the message she never contacted terrorists dumbass.

  • Angelheaded Hipster

she was passing messages from the sheikh to terrorists in egypt on how to proceed and what his wishes were -- this is acceptable to you?

    carry on !

    Question for Angelheaded Hipster:

You catch your mom as she's about to pass secret messages to terrorists in Egypt.

Do you shoot her or let her put the safety and lives of US citizens at risk?

Or do you ask her to sit on the subway with you in her underwear?

    i agree with felix,

!!!my head is about to explode.!!!

Breaking a regulation isn't terrorism. And she couldn't provide her client a defense when all their meetings were videotape and recorded. She isn't a terrorist and doesn't belong in jail.

Does every headline have to be a sensationalized exaggeration here?

A couple of clicks reveals that she was elected to be one of 24 members of the "Local Station Board." Hardly equates to "heading" the station.

WBAI, a station I used to support monetarily, continues to be a joke.

  • Mr Mel

    You're right, don't give them a nickel.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Angelhead. You don't have the facts at all. The federal govt played footage of the world trade center collapsing when it had nothing to do with her.

  • Angelheaded Hipster

i believe they also had footage of her in a visiting room breaking the regulations governing such visits, F-bomb

the things she did were not things a civil rights activist does and ceetainly not a responsible member of the bar

  • Angelheaded Hipster

she was enamored of being a secret-agent for her clients

she should have got 17 years---she was helping these guys pass messages to the outside

  • Earthdog

Soon we'll be able to hear Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and his wild and wacky crew of fanatics for "Jihad in the Morning".

  • NannyState

    "Opie and Osama"

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'
